Sony Ericsson W810i
Score: 90% When: April 2006 Worth: $450 What: Music phones, Sony Ericsson phones
Picking up where the W800i left off, the Sony Ericsson W810i offers improved music navigation in tandem with the same excellent music management capabilities and decent amount of bundled memory as its predecessor. Out-of-box audio quality is on par with the high standards we’ve come to except from the handset maker, while we’re slightly disappointed by the lack of stereo Bluetooth audio. These niggles aside, the W810i makes for a stellar music phone with side servings of a 2 Megapixel camera and EDGE. More...

Nokia N91
Score: 85% When: June 2006 Worth: $600 What: Phones, Music phones
Not much holds the N91 back from scoring full marks in the music department; the lack of bundled quality headphones and stereo Bluetooth audio is about it. Otherwise excellent audio quality, an intuitive interface, comfortable controls and superb music transfer capabilities including Windows Media Connect support are all favoured traits, as is the massive 4 GB of storage - although we're a bit miffed by the rotund form factor. Voice and messaging capabilities are first-rate with the exception of a slightly cramped keypad, while the 2 Megapixel camera and browser are unlikely to impress. As a result of its varied feature set and hard drive reliance, battery life is expectedly average, but the N91 still outperforms the vast majority of music phones at the time of writing. More...

Sony Ericsson K750i
Score: 80% When: June 2005 Worth: $290 - $410 What: Camera phones, Sony Ericsson phones
Compact yet high quality, Sony Ericsson’s K750i is the first camera phone to merge a 2 Megapixel camera with a small form factor and still achieve results with good colour saturation and comparably crisp detail. The inclusion of auto and macro focus further reinforce a positive impression, even though we’re slightly disappointed by its poor synchronization performance. Connectivity in general is also a tad limited, but the high resolution screen provides a window to an otherwise impressive handset. More...

Palm Treo 700w
Score: 80% When: January 2006 Worth: $500 - $410 What: Business phones, 3G phones
The Treo 700w is an evolution, not revolution, of the Treo line - save for the OS change. Its biggest new features are lickey-split EV-DO support and a higher-resolution camera which we're luke warm on. On the software front, Palm's tweaks to the Windows Mobile interface make for an improved one-handed experience yet kinks still exist in the bundled suite of applications. Still, existing Windows Mobile users should find it a very compelling device at a very competitive price, while Treo 650 owners are unlikely to be swayed. More...

Nokia BH-800
Score: 80% When: April 2006 Worth: $150 - $410 What: Phones, Bluetooth headsets
As much a fashion accessory as it is a headset, Nokia's BH-800 mono Bluetooth headset puts on a good show despite its compact size. Its mediocre range and average battery life are likely both consequences of its design, while the rubber-encircled speaker insert is less so; still, comfort is quite good once the initial (and cumbersome) adaptation has been carried out, and the headset's easily-distinguished keys and good quality further contribute to a positive overall impression. Nokia N73
When: August 2006 Worth: $550 What: Phones, Camera phones
Falling only marginally short of the image quality produced by its gargantuan N93 sibling, Nokia's N73 is a superb choice for shutterbugs with its excellent picture taking skills, a multitude of sharing options and compact size - but for some strange reason it skimps on memory. The basics have also been looked well after with first-rate calling and solid messaging capabilities under the hood alongside a raft of multimedia and productivity options; whether for pleasure or business, this one's a winner. LG AX490
When: August 2006 Worth: $60 What: Phones, LG phones
Messaging fanatics who don't want to carry around a bulky phone/PDA combo will get a kick out of LG's new AX490, the first U.S. phone with a Fastap keypad. The newfangled setup gives you a full set of letter keys arranged around and between the regular numeric keypad. However, the letter keys are arranged in alphabetical order, so those used to a QWERTY thumbboard could have a steep learned curve ahead of them.
Otherwise, the clamshell comes with a solid set of features, including Bluetooth, a VGA camera, 1xRTT data access, voice commands, and a speakerphone.

LG VX8500
Score: 60% When: July 2006 Worth: $149 What: Phones, LG phones
With its groovy Flash interface and revamped music player, LG's new VX8500 Chocolate phone makes for one of the most satisfying V Cast music handsets we've seen to date; unfortunately, it's hobbled by its lack of dedicated music controls, earbuds and USB cables, while its touch-sensitive inputs are way too sensitive for our taste.
