Sony Ericsson W810i
Score: 90% When: April 2006 Worth: $450 What: Music phones, Sony Ericsson phones
Picking up where the W800i left off, the Sony Ericsson W810i offers improved music navigation in tandem with the same excellent music management capabilities and decent amount of bundled memory as its predecessor. Out-of-box audio quality is on par with the high standards we’ve come to except from the handset maker, while we’re slightly disappointed by the lack of stereo Bluetooth audio. These niggles aside, the W810i makes for a stellar music phone with side servings of a 2 Megapixel camera and EDGE. More...

Nokia N91
Score: 85% When: June 2006 Worth: $600 What: Phones, Music phones
Not much holds the N91 back from scoring full marks in the music department; the lack of bundled quality headphones and stereo Bluetooth audio is about it. Otherwise excellent audio quality, an intuitive interface, comfortable controls and superb music transfer capabilities including Windows Media Connect support are all favoured traits, as is the massive 4 GB of storage - although we're a bit miffed by the rotund form factor. Voice and messaging capabilities are first-rate with the exception of a slightly cramped keypad, while the 2 Megapixel camera and browser are unlikely to impress. As a result of its varied feature set and hard drive reliance, battery life is expectedly average, but the N91 still outperforms the vast majority of music phones at the time of writing. More...

LG LX550
Score: 80% When: May 2006 Worth: $180 - $330 What: Music phones, LG phones
The stylish, white-and-blue LG LX550 (now known as the "Fusic") is one of the friendliest music phones we've laid eyes on – think of it as the 3G handset next door. Complete with three removable faceplates (blue, pink and black), the LX550's brilliant 262,000-color internal display (the 65,000-color external LCD is workable) looked bright and vivid, and the flat, blue-backlit keypad is both easy to use and easy on the eyes. With its microSD memory expansion (up to 1GB), access to the Sprint Music Store and dedicated music controls on the external flip, the 4.2-ounce LX550 performs its music duties well, and it even adds an FM transmitter for broadcasting your tunes to the nearest radio (sound quality was surprisingly good). You can groove to the music (at ear-splittingly high volumes) over the included (and decent) earbuds or with a Bluetooth stereo headset, although LG is still tweaking the Bluetooth stereo profile to make it work with Sprint Music Store tracks (unprotected music files work fine using the integrated music player). Finally, the hazy snapshots we took using the Fusic's 1.3-megapixel camera were disappointing.

Samsung SCH-A930
Score: 78% When: June 2006 Worth: $100 - $200 What: Phones, Music phones
While this jet-black, nearly four-ounce 3G clamshell is a little bulkier than we'd like, it makes up plenty of ground with its rock-solid music capabilities, ability to sync tunes with a PC, vivid display, Bluetooth and built-in GPS. Meanwhile, road warriors will appreciate the phone's speedy data and dial-up networking abilities. More...

T-Mobile Sidekick 3
Score: 73% When: July 2006 Worth: $300 - $350 What: Phones, T-Mobile phones
With its music, EDGE and Bluetooth capabilities, the sleek new Sidekick 3 may not be a giant leap forward (we're holding out for a 3G version once T-Mobile gets around to launching a high-speed network), but it's a worthy successor to one of the best messaging phones on the market. More...

T-Mobile Sidekick 3
Score: 80% When: July 2006 Worth: $300 - $350 What: Phones, T-Mobile phones
The Sidekick 3 won't fit in a jeans pocket by any means, but at least it offers good control layout as well as a roomy and easy to use QWERTY keypad. The display is a bit of a disappointment, but perhaps the most intuitive interface we've ever seen and superb e-mail and IM features mitigate this. Unfortunately, the Sidekick 3 lacks some key music-playing features and its 1.3 Megapixel camera offers mediocre output. On the other hand, we experienced a relatively speedy mobile browser over the phone's EDGE connection as well as more than four hours of talk time with excellent voice quality. The standby time was measured to only 1.5 days and the speakerphone sounded a bit tinny, however, support for MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth headsets are a plus. More...

Sony Ericsson W300i
Score: 72% When: July 2006 Worth: $299 What: Phones, Music phones
Delivering music on the cheap, Sony Ericsson's W300i delivers something of a contrast-filled out-of-box experience with a first-rate interface and sound quality - offset by low storage and an otherwise anemic feature set. Fortunately, memory expansion and a friendly price tag saves the day, making this an excellent alternative for those desiring a mix of solid call and message handling and excellent music capabilities. Samsung SCH-A990
Score: 79% When: July 2006 Worth: $350 - $400 What: Phones, Camera phones
With its 3.2-megapixel camera and swiveling display, the 3G-enabled Samsung SCH-A990 takes some of the sharpest pictures we've seen from a U.S. cameraphone. Unfortunately, this somewhat bulky clamshell stumbles with Verizon Wireless' clunky V Cast Music player and its lack of a USB cable and stereo earbuds. More...

LG VX8300
Score: 70% When: June 2006 Worth: $100 - $150 What: 3G phones, Music phones
The slimmed-down, stereo Bluetooth-enabled VX8300 represents a marked improvement over LG's popular (but bulky) VX8100 mulltimedia phone. Unfortunately, the eye-catching clamshell comes saddled with the V Cast Music player -- which won't work with stereo Bluetooth (for now, at least) -- and lacks bundled earbuds and a memory expansion card.
