LG LX550

  LG LX550

Score: 80% When: May 2006 Worth: $180 - $330 What: Music phones, LG phones

The stylish, white-and-blue LG LX550 (now known as the "Fusic") is one of the friendliest music phones we've laid eyes on – think of it as the 3G handset next door. Complete with three removable faceplates (blue, pink and black), the LX550's brilliant 262,000-color internal display (the 65,000-color external LCD is workable) looked bright and vivid, and the flat, blue-backlit keypad is both easy to use and easy on the eyes. With its microSD memory expansion (up to 1GB), access to the Sprint Music Store and dedicated music controls on the external flip, the 4.2-ounce LX550 performs its music duties well, and it even adds an FM transmitter for broadcasting your tunes to the nearest radio (sound quality was surprisingly good). You can groove to the music (at ear-splittingly high volumes) over the included (and decent) earbuds or with a Bluetooth stereo headset, although LG is still tweaking the Bluetooth stereo profile to make it work with Sprint Music Store tracks (unprotected music files work fine using the integrated music player). Finally, the hazy snapshots we took using the Fusic's 1.3-megapixel camera were disappointing.

  LG VX8300

Score: 70% When: June 2006 Worth: $100 - $150 What: 3G phones, Music phones

The slimmed-down, stereo Bluetooth-enabled VX8300 represents a marked improvement over LG's popular (but bulky) VX8100 mulltimedia phone. Unfortunately, the eye-catching clamshell comes saddled with the V Cast Music player -- which won't work with stereo Bluetooth (for now, at least) -- and lacks bundled earbuds and a memory expansion card.   LG F9200

Score: 67% When: January 2006 Worth: $150 - $150 What: Messaging phones, Teen phones

If you’re all about the text, the F9200’s relatively robust messaging features will likely make the grade. But for anyone who even remotely cares about phone displays or image quality on your snapshots, the phone’s cheap LCD and mediocre camera are sure to disappoint – especially considering that LG’s feature-packed (and 3G-enabled) VX9800 is available at Verizon Wireless for just $50 more.   LG F7200

Score: 64% When: May 2006 Worth: $1 - $99 What: LG phones, Cingular phones

With the F7200, LG and Cingular have made a good first stab at a GSM push-to-talk phone. While we wish the handset’s overall design was a bit more compact and we miss the flexibility of out-of-network PTT, the F7200 makes for a solid alternative to the handsets on Nextel’s iDen network – and the price is right. That said, if you want PTT from Cingular with a slimmer form factors and higher-end features like Bluetooth and EDGE support (and you don’t mind shelling out a bit more cash), the Samsung SGH-D357 might be worth a look.   LG VX8500

Score: 60% When: July 2006 Worth: $149 - $99 What: Phones, LG phones

With its groovy Flash interface and revamped music player, LG's new VX8500 Chocolate phone makes for one of the most satisfying V Cast music handsets we've seen to date; unfortunately, it's hobbled by its lack of dedicated music controls, earbuds and USB cables, while its touch-sensitive inputs are way too sensitive for our taste.   LG AX490

When: August 2006 Worth: $60 What: Phones, LG phones

Messaging fanatics who don't want to carry around a bulky phone/PDA combo will get a kick out of LG's new AX490, the first U.S. phone with a Fastap keypad. The newfangled setup gives you a full set of letter keys arranged around and between the regular numeric keypad. However, the letter keys are arranged in alphabetical order, so those used to a QWERTY thumbboard could have a steep learned curve ahead of them. Otherwise, the clamshell comes with a solid set of features, including Bluetooth, a VGA camera, 1xRTT data access, voice commands, and a speakerphone.
