Palm Treo 700w
Score: 80% When: January 2006 Worth: $500 What: Business phones, 3G phones
The Treo 700w is an evolution, not revolution, of the Treo line - save for the OS change. Its biggest new features are lickey-split EV-DO support and a higher-resolution camera which we're luke warm on. On the software front, Palm's tweaks to the Windows Mobile interface make for an improved one-handed experience yet kinks still exist in the bundled suite of applications. Still, existing Windows Mobile users should find it a very compelling device at a very competitive price, while Treo 650 owners are unlikely to be swayed. More...

Palm Treo 700p
Score: 80% When: May 2006 Worth: $400 - $680 What: Business phones, 3G phones
The Palm Treo 700p certainly isn't perfect: we wish Wi-Fi were supported, some basic calling features could use some shoring up, and the Palm OS is in sore need of a refresh. That said, with its vivid display, wireless modem capabilities, superior e-mail handling, and better-than-expected picture and video features, the 700p easily ranks as the most satisfying Treo to date. Sprint Treo 650
Score: 75% When: May 2006 Worth: $599 - $680 What: Business phones, Sprint phones
It is always difficult to follow on success, but palmOne’s fourth generation Treo manages to do just that. It takes the already first-rate design of the Treo 600 and rounds out the feature set, adding more polish, pizazz, and tweaks to perfect the design. The memory overhead problem is the only major gaffe on the Treo 650, although the current lack of Bluetooth DUN support and out of the box voice dialing is also disappointing. On the flip side, excellent software integration, a first-rate thumbboard, good camera, and record-breaking battery life make the Treo 650 a compelling product, and one that replaces the Treo 600 as the standard-setting communicator on the market. Nokia E61
When: July 2006 What: Business phones, Nokia phones
The E61 does what Nokia does best: connects people. Its all-encompassing connectivity setup is exploited in full by a broad line-up of quality messaging, office and browsing applications which run in tandem with a superb screen and more than decent thumbboard. Granted, it's not among the most powerful business phones nor does it fare well in the department of synchronization - but the latter is at long last addressable by several third party solutions. Sprinkle with handy utilities, attention to detail, good battery life and a compact form factor, and you end up with a very solid business phone contender indeed. More...

Motorola Q
Score: 66% When: May 2006 Worth: $200 - $300 What: Business phones, Motorola phones
The Q looks great: slipping it in a jeans pocket is no problem, and it was easy to hold against our cheek during calls. The QWERTY keypad is refreshingly roomy, making for good two- or even one-handed typing. The display looked bright and razor-sharp to our eyes; unfortunately, it isn’t a touchscreen. Our Web browsing on the mobile Internet Explorer was relatively speedy thanks to the Q’s EV-DO connection. The Q’s relative simplicity comes with some important limitations: namely, the lack of a full Office Mobile suite. Its messaging features are up to snuff, however, and music mavens will get a kick out of the mobile Windows Media Player. The Q's 1.3-megapixel camera took surprisingly good pictures for a smartphone. We got about 4.5 hours of talk time for the Q, but conference calling is surprisingly missing. More...

RIM BlackBerry 8700g
Score: 74% When: April 2006 Worth: $300 - $400 What: Business phones, T-Mobile phones
With its bright screen, full-QWERTY keypad, EDGE and Bluetooth support, and characteristically superb e-mail handling, the 8700g is a strong choice for anyone looking to take the BlackBerry plunge. That said, T-Mobile customers who want a BlackBerry device that fits in a pocket might be better off with the slightly smaller (if tougher to use) 7105t, which features a pseudo-QWERTY thumbboard, while bargain hunters may want to scoop up the 7290 for just $100 (or the similarly priced 7105t, for that matter). HP iPAQ hw6915
When: September 2006 What: Phones, Business phones
The unique selling point of the HP iPAQ hw6915 is its integrated GPS support - which also happens to be the sole feature of this business phone which truly shines. Above-par performance and a large screen are both good and well, but come at the expense of battery life. Also, the screen is of too low resolution to be much good for document management, and when coupled with mediocre data entry allows for only light work. Its unfortunate lack of 3G aside, it does however offer excellent connectivity as well as favourable one-handed navigation. More...
