Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230
Full review »   Scoreboard »   Features »   Gallery »
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 The $200 price range is one of the most popular places to be for a consumer on a budget, and with so many options, it can be overwhelming at times. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 was a great overall performer that actually gave us a decent image performance. The Cyber-shot DSC-W230 didn't offer any state-of-the-art bells and whistles, but it did provide plenty of features to suit a variety of shooting environments. We liked the large LCD, but the rest of the camera was just a collage of things we’ve seen time and time again in this class. For a $50 price hike, shooters can spring for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290, which features a 28mm wide-angle lens, 5x optical zoom and 720p HD video recording. The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS is the Cyber-shot DSC-W230's main contender, and we think the Canon took the edge in this competition. It still doesn't mean the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 isn't worth taking a gander at, but we strongly recommend playing the field before settling down with this model. Release: April 2009. Price: $200.
Pros: Decent feature set for an entry-level compact. Some impressive image quality. Large LCD.
Cons: No viewfinder. Design—been there, done that. No standout features.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90's pretty colors and sleek, sliding faceplate alone will sell this camera. Oh, there's also the 3-inch all touch-screen LCD and babbling brook of Auto features like Smile Shutter and Blink Warning. However, we discovered that the Cyber-shot DSC-T90's image quality did not have enough stamina to endure a majority of our tests. We found some echelon of failure in every image, which was a major letdown. If Facebook is your primary photo album, you'll do fine with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90. However, those who don't plan on snapping covert images of drunk people late at night and tagging the most embarrassing ones will feel at a loss. Advanced features are on the slim and there's no onboard connectivity. The Cyber-shot DSC-T90 is yet another vain fashion compact, but if you can live without a larger high-res touchscreen, it'll at least cost you $110 less than the DSC-T900. Release: April 2009. Price: $270.
Pros: Sexy looks. Great Auto controls. Super compact.
Cons: Sad image quality. Testy interface. Limited advanced features.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 Here is yet another smart looking faceplate slider from Sony, this year with even more style and a shutter button zoom toggle. But is that it? Sadly, it is. Not much has changed under the hood, other than a megapixel boost and 720P high-definition video recording. Image quality was even less impressive than last year's Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 and the prodigious touch-screen LCD exhibited the same testy behavior as well. At 380 smackers, its difficult to justify the purchase of this little devil dressed in red, but brand loyalists and fashion-conscious consumers will scoop this slim temptation up without a second thought. Oh, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 will sell, no doubt. But don't go crying on the mountain when you find out its image quality and features don't match the camera's looks. Release: April 2009. Price: $380.
Pros: Sexy design. Massive LCD. Easy to use.
Cons: Mediocre image quality. No onboard connectivity. Limited features.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 The prognosis is just as we expected. Sony's top of the line fashion cam is just another cute accessory packed with many consumer-driven features. And there's nothing wrong with that. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700's fans would not have it any other way. Who wants to fiddle with Shutter Speed or Aperture while you're half in the bag at an Armani show? The Cyber-shot DSC-T700's offers a slew of playback features, is fully touch-screen operated and can fit in a wallet—a very big wallet that is. Perhaps the most tantalizing spec is the built-in 4GB of internal memory. How many other cameras do you see with that much space? Between the giant LCD, sexy colors and hot design, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 has its place within the digital camera world. Release: September 2008. Price: $350.
Pros: Huge LCD screen. Super Compact. Sleek design.
Cons: Inconsistent image quality. Stubborn interface. Minimal manual controls.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77
Full review »   Scoreboard »   Features »   Gallery »
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77 The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77 holds a definitive place for the fashion-conscious consumer crowd. It's sleek, sexy and comes in a variety of hot color options. The DSC-T77 also has a slick sliding faceplate and an ample touch screen LCD. Unfortunately, the LCD screen didn't live up to our expectations and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77's image quality proved to be lacking in many aspects. Playback is probably the best part, allowing shooters to perform Photoshop-esque image modifications in camera. Those looking for a plethora of manual controls and shooting options will be disappointed while those who crave the latest in swanky digital imaging will fall head over high heels for the DSC-T77. Release: September 2008. Price: $255.
Pros: Hot looks. Great playback features. Super compact.
Cons: Mediocre image quality across the board. Poor touch screen response. Minimal manual controls.
