Handspring's latest additions to its line of Visor handhelds are the Visor Platinum and the Visor Prism, both of which has improved performance, but only Prism has a color screen - and we've tested it.

Inside the box

The Handspring Visor Prism, like other Visor handhelds, comes in a small box that leaves little room for other things than the device itself. Inside the Visor Prism box you've of course got the device itself and its plastic screen cover, the standard leather sleeve, the synchronization cradle, drivers and manuals.

Ill: Handspring
The Synchronization cradle has been altered to reflect that the Visor Prism doesn't longer use AAA batteries like previous Visors, but instead has a non-removable battery pack built-in that recharges through the cradle. The cradle accompanying the device is an USB cradle, compatible with Windows 98 and 2000, and here Handspring has chosen what seems to us as a rather peculiar solution. The AC adapter is not plugged directly into the Prism or the cradle, but instead plugs into the USB connector. Once you get used to it you'll never notice it, but we would have liked the option to plug it directly into the device itself so that one could leave the cradle behind when it's not needed.

Otherwise, the cradle matches the cobalt blue color of the Visor Prism (very elegant), and it also seems to let go of the unit after synchronizing a bit easier than before. When we tested the Visor Deluxe, also with a USB cradle, it was sometimes tricky to remove it from the cradle - this seems to be working better with this cradle.

The accompanying installation CD will install Palm Desktop version 3.1, as well as the necessary drivers for HotSyncing and other functions. The quick reference guide will help unexperienced users get started with the device, while the full guide is available in .PDF format on the accompanying installation CD.
