Samsung’s Digimax L85 offers 8 megapixels, a 5X optical zoom, and tons of other functions. Its retro design won’t fit in your pocket, but does it deserve a spot in your bag?

Review summary of the Samsung Digimax L85:
         Gallery »
Samsung Digimax L85 The Samsung Digimax L85 isn't the thinnest or most feature-packed camera available, but it offers a respectable feature set, unique design, and most importantly – good pictures. Some photos experience minor fringing and the ISO doesn't exceed 400, but overall this point-and-shoot won't let you down. Release: July 2006. Price: $379.

Full Samsung Digimax L85 Review:
Unlike most point-and-shoot cameras, the samsung Digimax L85 is bulky. this design makes it look unique, however, and helps it stand out in a sea of silver, pocket-sized shooters.

Ease of use - Good

A wide, rubberized body allows for a comfortable grip when held, with most controls residing on the back, including buttons for aperture, shutter and manual modes; effects; trash; print; and a four-way navpad. buttons are decently sized, and the shutter release, power button, and mode dial on top are easy to use. The Digimax L85 offers a respectable collection of scene choices, plus a few modes for getting closeups (auto macro takes you within 3.9 inches and super macro mode gets you 0.4 inches away). switching between modes is simple. bonus points: HDMI connectivity for hi-def photo and video viewing on HDTVs - although this requires an optional dock accessory.

Image quality - Very good

Colors and details proved to be accurate, and the 5X optical zoom sacrificed little quality. some purple fringing appeared in several of our shots, but did not exceed tolerable levels. our only real complaints are that photos can only be taken up to ISO 400 (which won't help much in low-light situations), as well as the complete lack of neither digital nor optical image stabilization is not included. The Digimax L85 also shoots VGA video at 30 FPS, churning out acceptable footage quality. fortunately, no limits were placed on clip length, enabling continuous recording to the point of filling a memory card to the brim.

Price and availability

The Samsung Digimax L85 will start selling for $379 () in July 2006.
