It has a 2 Megapixel camera, an audio player, memory expansion and a glorious high-resolution display - but Sindre Lia isn't convinced the Nokia 6270 is built for multimedia.

Review summary of the Nokia 6270:
         Gallery »
Nokia 6270 Offering a long-awaited improvement on Nokia’s user interface as well as an excellent screen and a very comfortable keypad, the 6270 fails to impress with regard to design. Furthermore, despite its strong focus on multimedia features such as a 2 Megapixel camera and a music player, the handset simply doesn’t deliver as compared to other recent multimedia phones - and as such comes recommended as a phone for users in search of a user-friendly interface and good battery life as opposed to powerful multimedia features. €350 EUR, available throughout Europe. Release: November 2005. Price: $350.
Pros: Excellent screen; good battery life; comfortable keypad
Cons: Mediocre camera; poor music player

Full Nokia 6270 Review:
Recognizing that the popular, yet aging 6230i is due for replacement, Nokia slides a duo of high-end handsets to market in form of the 3G-enabled 6280 and the sans-3G 6270. Having an enhanced version of the Series 40 user interface as its standout feature, Sindre Lia goes one on one with the Nokia 6270.

Weighing in at 125 g and measuring 104 x 50 x 23 mm, the Nokia 6270 clocks in at a decently sized slider form factor - although quite far from slim offerings such as the Samsung SGH-T809. The 6270 does, however, offer very comfortable numerical buttons, accompanied by action buttons and a navigation pad of similar build and quality with the exception of providing slightly too loud audible feedback.

Sporting a vivid 262K colour screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, the 6270 scores high in the display department. The large screen also enables the introduction of a concept dubbed the 'active standby' screen by Nokia, where shortcut icons, recent notes and FM radio status are neatly displayed and rapidly accessed. As with the recently reviewed Nokia 6111, the 6270 also offers Series 40 upgrades such as being able to mark several messages for simultaneous deletion. Minor improvements aside, however, the interface of the 6270 for the most part remains similar in look and feel to that of previous Nokia handsets.

The Nokia 6270 also features a 2 Megapixel camera, snapping stills of good quality in daylight and of adequate quality in darker environments. Aiming to assimilate the functions of a dedicated camera, the phone's display, which acts as a viewfinder, automatically switches to landscape mode when the camera is activated. Its various options are then easily adjusted by means of the action buttons and volume buttons, with the handset also offering video recording at 176 x 144 pixels. Both stills and videos can quickly be added to MMS messages from within the camera application.

As for phone-centric features, the Nokia 6270 operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz networks, and offers up EDGE and GPRS for high-speed data transfers. Furthermore, we find an FM radio, a WAP 2.0 browser, two included games in 3D Snake and Golf Tour, as well as operator-dependent features such as Push-To-Talk and Visual Radio. The 6270 also supports MP3 and polyphonic ringtones, SMS and MMS messages, in addition to sporting Bluetooth 2.0, Infrared and USB via Pop Port as connectivity options.

Somewhat mediocre stereo soundspeakers are also available, as well as a music player of average quality. Worthy of note, though, the 6270 is actually capable of posing as a mass storage device when inserting its bundled 128 MB microSD card - but make sure you don't lose sight of it as the 5 MB of internal memory won't do you much good.

The reception and voice quality of the Nokia 6270 both proved excellent, whereas the phone offered approximately 3.5 hours of talktime and 6 days of standby time as compared to the claimed 5 hours and 10 days, respectively.

Availability

The Nokia 6270 is at the time of press selling in the €350 EUR range throughout Europe.
