Motorola's T720i comes equipped with a 12-bit color display, digital camera accessory and support for J2ME. Add good battery life, and Sindre Lia likes what he sees.
 | The T720i offers up a digital camera accessory and improved battery life over the T720
| As the successor to Motorola's first mass-market device with a color display, the T720, the main difference between the T720i and its predecessor is the battery life. While the T720 is listed as having a standby time of 170 hours and a talk time of 5 hours and 50 minutes, the T720i is listed as offering 230 hours of standby time and a talk time of 6 hours and 30 minutes. And of course, another important difference is the digital camera accessory that comes bundled with the T720i.
The digital camera, which weighs in at 25 grams and offers QVGA resolution at 320 x 240 pixels, sports a lense that 180 degree swivel lens. The phone can store up to 20 images with the image quality setting set to 'high', and up to 40 pictures in 'low' quality. After shooting a picture, this is transferred to the T720i for viewing. Should a user choose to store the picture, a request will also pop up to ask whether the picture should be sent as an MMS.
Unfortunately, viewing pictures is not among the better features of the T720i given its poor reproduction of colours. However, pictures taken are still of impeccable quality compared with those of other digital cameras in this category when viewed with other computing devices, such as a PC or a Nokia 3650.
Audio quality is also one of the better features of the T720i, and as for battery life our review unit offered up approximately 8 days of standby time and 4 hours of talk time during the test period.

Availability
The Motorola T720i is available in most European countries, and sells in the 325 EUR range without contract.
Conclusion
The Motorola T720i is definitively an improvement over its predecessor, the T720, in that its battery life has been notably extended in terms of talk time. Its meny us simplistic and user friendly, however its color screen did display a few weaknesses - and particularly so when viewing pictures taken with the bundled digital camera. Unfortunately, the phone does not come equipped with any embedded means of data synchronization, such as Bluetooth or IrDA, but rather requires an USB cable to be purchased separately.
- What's positive: Digital camera, J2ME, good battery life, low price
- What's negative: Lacks IrDA and Bluetooth, non-user friendly approach to creating SMS messages
