Nokia's 6100 is now available: join Sindre Lia as he takes a look at the compact and light phone, finding it to have an adequate battery life and display, among other things.
Continuing to flood the market with mobile phones, Nokia's new 6100 appears only shortly after the manufacturer's 6610 and 7210 models hit shelves. Equipped with a new and more compact framework, as well as a new reduced-size battery, the 6100 measures in at 102 x 44 x 13.5 mm and weighs 76 g. Even though the new battery is small, however, it has a listed talk time of up to 6 hours and a standby time of up to 13 days.

Appearance-wise, the Nokia 6100 is 'business cool' and fits well into the hand. The keypad provides good tactile feedback, and the 12-bit color display with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels (up to 8 lines of text) is quite up to par with competing offerings. Seeing as how the 6100 runs on Series 40, the navigational button offers shortcuts to for instance Calendar and New message when the user isn't navigating the menu or applications.
The 6100's phone book can store up to 300 contacts, while the inbox can store up to 150 SMS messages. How much can be stored of each depends on the number of MMS messages, ringtones, pictures and J2ME applications a user has stored, as it uses dynamic memory allocation with a total capacity of 725 KB. Three J2ME applications - Converter II, World Clock and Puzzle Chess - are pre-installed, but can be deleted. New applications and games can be purchased and downloaded through a dedicated menu entry. The 6100 of course also supports polyphonic ringtones, and as such come with 21 pre-stored of varying quality. The integrated Pop-port ensures compatibility with accessories such as the Nokia Camera Headset or the Nokia Music Stand.
GSM 900/1800/1900, GPRS Class 4, HSCSD and WAP 1.2.1 are also on the feature list, but the 6100 lacks an integrated FM radio. With a brand new battery, it delivers a talk time of approximately 5 hours and a standby time of about 12 days - a bit better than the Nokia 6610, but slightly less than what Nokia lits. Also, the 6100 has been fitted with updated icons. Audio quality through the phone's own speaker and the bundled handsfree set is good, but suffers under poor coverage conditions.

The Nokia 6100 is currently available throughout most European countries, priced in the 500 EUR range without subscription.
