New Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi and Kindle Wi-Fi eReaders UnveiledBy Sindre Lia, Thursday 29 July 2010

The new Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi and Kindle Wi-Fi eReaders will be available in late August, sporting a next-generation eInk screen.

With Amazon's Kindle Store now being available on a wide range of portable devices, including eReaders, smartphones and tablets, the sales of Kindle eBooks is exploding. Today, Amazon introduced a new generation of Kindle eReaders, including the Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi and the Kindle Wi-Fi. The latter offers the same feature set with the exception of the 3G connection.

Kindle Receives Next-Generation eInk Screen

The new Kindle has received a next-generation eInk screen claiming to offer 50 percent better contrast than any other eReader, providing clearer text and sharper images as a result. According to Amazon, no other eReader can match the Kindle experience, as the new eInk screen is currently exclusively available on this device. One of Kindle's main selling points is to enable you to read in bright sunlight with no glare.

Kindle's new eInk display is also optimized with Amazon's proprietary waveform and font technology to make pages turn faster and fonts sharper. Waveform is a series of electronic pulses that move black and white electronic ink particles to achieve a final gray level for an image or text. Amazon tuned the new Kindle's waveform and controller mechanism to make page turning 20 percent faster. In addition, this waveform tuning combined with new hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting is promised to make words and letters more crisp, clear and natural-looking.

Reduced Size, Twice the Storage Capacity

The new Kindle has a 21 percent smaller body while retaining the 6-inch-size reading area. Weighing in at 8.7 ounces, the Kindle is also 15 percent lighter and still 1/3 of an inch thick.

Additionally, the new Kindle has double the storage capacity so you can carry up to 3500 books. Amazon also claims that the Kindle will deliver up to 30 days of battery life with the wireless connection off. With the wireless connection on, the battery life is claimed to last up to 10 days.
