Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 Compact Unveiled

By Mike Perlman, Thursday 8 July 2010

If you're a beginner and want a sexy slider with touchscreen, check out the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 story here.

If you've always craved one of Sony's sexy touchscreen slider compact point-and-shoot digital cameras, then the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 might be right up your alley.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 fits right in between last year's Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900. It has a 14.1-megapixel CCD, three-inch touchscreen LCD, and 25-mm wide Carl Zeiss lens. We thought the megapixel craze was over, but apparently Sony is stringing it out on its beginner models in order to attract a wider user base, as the T90 and T900 both featured 12-megapizel sensors.

Our main concern is image quality since the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T90 and T900 both exhibited identically mediocre performances. The T90's three-inch touch-screen LCD was anything but impressive, and we found the same regarding the T900's. So, we're looking for an enhanced touchscreen and image quality experience this time around with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99.

Aesthetically, not much has changed on the latest beginner-friendly Cyber-shot model. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 retains that same sleek rectangular design with rounded edges. The camera also appears thinner than its predecessors, and is available in Black, Lime Green, Pink, and Silver.

Sony has migrated its Sweep Panorama mode into the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99, and we also get an SD/SDHC card slot in addition to a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot. There's no talk of HD video on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99 yet, but we can only imagine that it will offer 720p.

We hope to see a faster and more intuitive menu system on the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T99, for that was one of our hangups with both the DSC-T900 and DSC-T90. Hopefully the LCD screen resolution will be improved, given that the LCD is the T99's only interface and monitor. But we shall see.
