Have you ever thought "wouldn't it be nice if I had an LCD screen on the front of my camera so it's easy to take self-portrait shots?" Samsung has thought that for a majority of 2010, and the Samsung DualView ST100 joins the TL210, along with the rest of the company's dual-monitor lineup this Fall. We had a blast with the TL210 not only because of its front facing monitor, which aided self-portrait shooting and group shots, but because the camera produced impressive images for its class and offered a nice level of manual controls and camera adjustments.

"Unlike any other feature found on digital cameras, consumers immediately recognize the value of what our dual LCD technology can do for them. There is no learning curve or technical understanding that must be achieved as it is a natural extension of what our customers are already doing. Samsung is looking to simplify that task with the new ST600 and ST100, ensuring they have the ability to take the perfect profile shot, and never have to miss that perfect picture moment with family and friends, even if they're not behind the camera," said SJ Park, President of Samsung Digital Imaging Division.
The cool thing about a DualView camera is that subjects have the ability to interact with the photographer since they can see themselves stationed on the front of the camera. Samsung also does a great job of blending the LCD screen seamlessly into the body of the camera for a stealthy look. We get a high-quality Schneider KREUZNACH lens with a 5x optical zoom and Optical and Digital Image Stabilization on the Samsung DualView ST100, though the camera does not get a wide-angle lens like its bigger sibling, the newly announced Samsung DualView ST600.
The Samsung DualView ST100 has a 14.2-megapixel sensor and Samsung's Smart Auto scene recognition technology that can be applied in Photo or Video mode. We hope the Samsung ST100's sensor is not just another entry into the megapixel war, for we'd rather have a 10-megapixel sensor that takes advantage of the smaller sensor more efficiently. The ability to capture huge images isn't necessary because a majority of ST100 users will be snapping at parties and uploading their images directly to YouTube during a hangover the next morning. Size doesn't matter, and Samsung needs to understand that because otherwise we'll just have beginners taking small poster-sized images and not knowing how to resize them for the web.
Samsung has increased the size of the DualView ST100's LCD to 1.8-inches, a slight boost from the previous 1.5-inches on the TL models. A Self-Portrait mode will be available on the Samsung DualView ST100, along with a couples mode that detects two heads tilted toward one another—we can't wait to get romantic now. The Children's mode is back as well, hopefully not with that detestable video of the satanic clown, beckoning us to look into the ST100's lens while he sips our soul into his horrible clown mouth. We also get a Jump Shot mode, where the front LCD will provide a visual cue for animated life go-getters to leap into the sky while the camera captures a series of three images, one of which will portray the radical image plucked from the credits of a cheesy 80's movie.
Samsung's Smart Gesture User Interface is incorporated into the Samsung ST100, allowing shooters to access key features with a tilt or hand gesture. Scrolling through images can be governed by tilting the camera in either direction, swiping the screen left or right, or playing images in a slideshow. For the stylish shooters, the Samsung ST600 will come in purple and pink, and is constructed of a slim metal body.
For rear-end monitoring, the Samsung DualView ST100 has a 3.5-inch LCD, but there's no word on the pixel count, which we think will probably be around 230,000. We get in-camera image editing, including Resize, Rotate, and Trimming, and a Photo Style Selector lets shooters choose between image effects like Retro, Cool, Calm, Classic, and Negative. 720p 30fps H.264 video makes its way onto the Samsung DualView ST600, as well as Fish Eye, Miniature, and Sketch Effect image filters.
