With electrifying colors and a 10x optical zoom, the Pentax Optio RZ10 is one attractive point-and-shoot. Read the full story here.
Pentax has announced a new point-and-shoot compact that not only specializes in electrifying colors, but sports a 10x optical zoom as well. Available in Classic Black, Pure White, Lime, and Violet, the Pentax Optio RZ10 definitely stands out.
Pentx Optio RZ10 Specs
The Optio RZ10's 10x optical zoom is definitely the prime focus with this camera, offering a focal length of 28mm to 280mm in the 35mm format. Pentax also promises up to a centimeter for Macro distances and an insane Intelligent Zoom which allows magnifications of up to 67 times, to cover a focal length of 1,876mm super-telephoto lens. We assume Pentax is using cropping to make this happen, and hope that the camera's Shake Reduction system can handle it.

With that said, the Pentax Optio RZ10 is equipped with a mechanical CCD-shift-type Shake Reduction mechanism and Pixel Track SR. We know the camera would function much more efficiently with an optical image stabilization system, but the small mechanics of the budget compact do not lend a hand to such systems.
The pint-sized Pentax Optio RZ10 will also have 720p HD movie capability with a Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode that automatically compensates for shake using the help of "exclusive software." We're not sure if this "exclusive software" is part of an editing program that has a filter that reduces shake, but we do know that the Pentax Optio RZ10 ships with MediaImpression 2.0 for image viewing, editing, and filing application.
A 14-megepixel sensor sits inside the Pentax Optio RZ10, and Pentax promises true-to-life colors, brilliant, high-quality images, and well-defined details, even at full resolution. We'll be the judges of that. The Pentax Optio RZ10 will have a 2.7-inch LCD with a very basic 230,000-pixel display.
More Specs
For the true consumer, the Pentax Optio RZ10 has Automatic Face Detection that recognizes up to 32 faces and captures the image within a split second. Pentax claims that an optimally exposed image will be captured in less than 0.03 seconds, even when heads are tilted or faces are slightly turned. There's also Smile Capture, which automatically captures an image when the subject smiles, and Blink Detection, which warns the photographer when the subject's eyes begin to close.
What consumer camera would not be complete without a Pet mode? This time around, the Pentax Optio RZ10 allows shooters to automatically detect unregistered faces of dogs and cats, in addition to providing greater accuracy. The Optio RZ10 will also offer digital filters like Toy Camera and Retro, a D-Range setting for Dynamic Range control, Digital Panorama mode, and a Burst mode that can tackle up to 40 images at a maximum speed of 9.1 images per second. A few nifty little tidbits consist of the fact that the Pentax Optio RZ10 will have three different aspect ratios to shoot in (4:3, 16:9, and 1:1), and the camera will support Eye-Fi wireless memory cards.
Price and Release Date
The Pentax Optio RZ10 will ship this October for $220.
