Pentax Optio RS1000 Offers Custom Designs

By Mike Perlman, Thursday 9 September 2010

The Pentax Optio RS1000 is fully customizable on the outside. Read about how to turn this new point-and-shoot into a parking ticket.

While Pentax has been busy pouring portions of the rainbow into its DSLR lineup, the company has equipped part of its consumer compact lineup with a complete system that enables shooters to apply different themed faceplates with custom graphics. We're talking about the Pentax Optio RS1000, which features plaid, tropical, abstract, and musical score themed faceplates to name a few. You can even customize your Pentax Optio RS1000 with a Golden Gate Bridge façade. This is done via a transparent plastic faceplate that secures to the front of the compact with four small hex head screws. Without the faceplate in tact, the Pentax Optio RS1000 has a groovy textured front area surrounding the lens.

The Pentax Optio RS1000 will ship with 11 standard skins, and a SKINIT gift card is included to help order free 3M pre-cut vinyl skins from the company's website, www.skinit.com. There's also an included stencil for tracing cutout lines onto anything, like pictures, drawings, and, how about speeding tickets? That would be badass, especially if you live in Boston where they hand out radioactive orange citations every 0.3 milliseconds.

The point is, the Pentax Optio RS1000 is reaching out to the Tweens, Teens, and young college students who wish to express themselves outwardly, in addition to their photography. You can even download a Pentax Personal Skin Designer from www.pentaximaging.com to import a picture or digital image and save it as a PDF for printing on a color printer.

Pentax Optio RS1000 Specs

We can't forget about what lies within the Pentax Optio RS1000, and the camera packs in a 14-megapixel sensor, large 3-inch LCD, 27.5mm wide 4x optical zoom lens, and a lightweight body roughly the size of a credit card. Pentax claims the RS1000's sensor specializes in noise reduction and features a powerful imaging engine for processing. Unfortunately, the LCD is a 230,000-pixel display, which is base quality.

If a 4x optical zoom is not enough, the Pentax Optio RS1000 has an Intelligent Zoom, which most likely crops the image in order to achieve higher optical magnifications that can be extended to approximately 26.8 times. Another consumer-friendly feature is the RS1000's Automatic Face Detection, equipped with Smile Capture, and a Natural Skin mode. Shooters will also have an Auto Picture mode and 15 different Scene modes to select from, including Blue Sky and Sunset.

The Pentax RS1000 also rocks 720p HD video and will feature a Movie Shake Reduction mode, which is most likely achieved via pixel or sensor shift. And what Pentax would be complete without digital filters for creative expression? Shooters can choose from Toy Camera, Retro, and Sepia to name a few. Multiple filters can also be used on one image. The Pentax Optio RS1000 will feature Digital Shake Reduction, Burst shooting at up to 16 images in 2 seconds (at 640 x 480), Auto-tracking AF, Digital Panorama, and decorative photo frames.

Price and Release Date

The Pentax Optio RS1000 will ship in October for $150.
