Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 Takes a Dive in September

By Mike Perlman, Wednesday 21 July 2010

It's rugged and ready to hit the waves. Is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 a necessary upgrade? Read the full story to find out.

One camera we can't wait to give a proper walloping is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10, the follow-up to the DMC-TS2. Why progress in ascending order when you can just skip right up to number 10? We're hoping that the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 makes up for that numerical gap with a stellar performance and tolerance to pain. The Panasonic TS camera lineup has ruled the rugged camera fleet since the introduction of the DMC-TS1, so hopefully the TS10 will uphold the title.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 Rugged Camera

"Rugged digital cameras are a growing category, and the Panasonic LUMIX TS-Series continues to be very popular among consumers who are looking to use their digital camera while playing sports, at the beach, or simply to take high-quality photos and videos, regardless of the shooting environment," said David Briganti, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. "The new LUMIX TS10 is also our most affordable rugged model and extremely easy-to-use – making it attractive for any consumer looking for a waterproof, freezeproof, dustproof and shockproof, rugged digital camera."

With that in mind, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 is waterproof up to 10 feet, shockproof to 5 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. This is not a groundbreaking list of accomplishments, for the Olympus Stylus TOUGH 8010 is capable of a lot more torture. However, if you've seen our review of the TOUGH 8010, you know that it couldn't pass any of our tests. Maybe the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 will get lucky, for its own well-being. The good news is that the Lumix DMC-TS10 comes with a silicone jacket to alleviate shocks and bumps.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 is packed with a 14-megapixel sensor (it seems like Panasonic doesn't want the megapixel war to end just yet) and 4x optical zoom lens. Intelligent Auto is particularly helpful on a camera like this, given the necessity of a quick frame-and-shoot underwater scenario. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 includes Face Detection and Intelligent Scene Selector, which automatically selects one of six Scene Modes – Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset based on the shooting environment.

We get the Quick AF system for fast focusing and MEGA OIS, which resides under the omnipotent POWER OIS. Like most point-and-shoot cameras, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 is strapped with Motion-JPEG HD video and utilizes Panasonic's Venus Engine IV processing. A standard 2.7-inch 230,000-pixel LCD resides in back as the only monitor and includes automatic LCD brightness adjustment based on the surrounding light. Honestly, Panasonic should have upgraded the TS name to 3 or 2.5 because the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS10 is the company's most unchanged camera in the Fall lineup.
