A 24x optical zoom and 1080p video? Hell yeah! The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 is here.
Exciting things are happening in the land of Panasonic Super Zooms, and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 is taking advanced digital imaging in a consumer-friendly package to the next level. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 solidifies itself at the top of a classic dynasty of Panasonic cameras that tout big zooms and impressive image quality, so the shoes to fill are beyond capacious. However, we feel as though Panasonic has poured a prodigious amount of goodness into the latest incantation of the FZ nation, so sit back and enjoy the ride.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Performance Camera
First off, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 is stationed with an enticing LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens with a 24x optical zoom for ultimate telephoto action. But the big news is that Panasonic is introducing a MOS sensor to the FZ100. "Panasonic is excited to be introducing its first full hybrid camera with MOS sensor – pursuing a higher level in resolution, sensitivity and speed," said David Briganti, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. "This new highly-functioning MOS sensor can record high-quality 1080 full AVCHD video, making it the ideal hybrid camera for both the casual shooter and the seasoned professional."
That's right—you heard it. 1080p HD video. Move over, Nikon Coolpix P100. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 is here! But, those are also some prodigious shoes to fill, for the Coolpix P100 cranked out some of the best video quality we saw all year. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 will have a 14.1-megapixel MOS sesnsor with the ability to shoot up to 11fps at full resolution in burst mode. That's a nice little glove to the face for the rest of the camera population, which is only capable of 10fps burst shooting. To further fortify this camera's high speed capability, we get Continuous Auto Focus up to 5fps at full resolution for action shots and an Intelligent Burst mode, where the camera judges the appropriate shutter speed for fast action. And move over Casio, for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 can shoot up to 60fps at 3.5-megapixels. Damn.
A new addition to Panasonic's Intelligent Auto mode is making an appearance on the Lumix DMC-FZ100, called Motion Deblur. We're already getting tired thinking of all the fast action testing this darn thing is going to require. Motion Deblur works with the FZ100's POWER O.I.S. by utilizing updated motion detection and brightness control to provide the fastest shutter speed possible, preventing any blur caused by hand shake or subject movement. The Intelligent Auto suite also includes Face Recognition, Face Detection, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, and Intelligent Exposure. We can now also use Panasonic's Intelligent Auto mode while recording video.
We like the three-inch 460,000-pixel fold-out rotating LCD for shooting in tight spots and we get the ability to record 1080p AVCHD video on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. My Color mode also makes its way onto the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100, including classic hits like Pin Hole, Film Grain, High Dynamic, and High Dynamic B&W. We get PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.2 HD edition right out of the box, which includes a YouTube uploader and 360-degree Panorama rotion via .MOV files. There's also a new Happy mode in Intelligent Auto that boosts the saturation, color, and sharpness for taking a warm, fuzzy picture.
