Olympus adds a new Stylus to the lot. The Olympus Stylus 7010 will bring AF Tracking and Magic Filters to the mainstage. Read the full article to see what else is new.
Olympus has added a new teammate to its fashion-conscious Stylus lineup, and the Olympus Stylus 7010 appears to be the company's most advanced ultra compact to date. However, no matter how hard Olympus tries, their cameras are still ugly. The Olympus Stylus 7010 is no exception to that strange phenomenon, for the camera is saddled with a soporific concoction of silver and grey paint and an unsightly orange lamp (perhaps Auto Focus or Data Transfer) located smack dab in the middle of the camera's façade.
From a technical perspective, the Olympus Stylus 7010 is rather enticing with its 7x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens. The Stylus 7010 will be equipped with a 12-megapixel that features TruePic III image processing, and Olympus claims their new slim sailor will produce "superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds." Based on the Stylus performances we've seen in the past, Olympus has a tall mountain to climb in order to provide some shred of validity to this claim.
Following in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 and Lumix DMC-ZS1's footsteps, the Olympus Stylus 7010 will now feature AF tracking, which allows the shooter to hone in on a particular object and track it throughout the screen, maintaining a constant focus. The Stylus 7010 even high-steps it a notch further with a specialized AF Tracking Pet mode in order to keep tabs on Sparky and Old Yeller. An Intelligent Auto mode is also part of the deal, and we're seeing Olympus make a solid attempt to fit in with the other kids in its class, based on these features.
We do like the fact that the Olympus Stylus 7010 will be stocked with a few Magic Filters, which can be found on models like their entry-level Olympus E-620 DSLR, one of our favorite performers of the year. We get Pop Art, Pinhole and Fish-Eye, which are three of the most popular filters out there. The Olympus Stylus 7010 will have Dual Image Stabilization, courtesy of mechanical Sensor-Shift technology and high ISO sensitivity and a 2.7-inch LCD. We get a few Olympus old standbys like Shadow Adjustment, Beauty Mode and In-Camera Panorama, all features that produced mediocre results in our tests of the Olympus Stylus 1040 and Olympus Stylus 1050 SW. We are intrigued by the new "OR" button (Olympus Recommendation), which suggests a particular shooting mode based on the immediate shooting environment when pressed.
The Olympus Stylus 7010 will be available for $200 in August 2009.
