The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is a compact that packs a punch with a new back-illuminated CMOS sensor, updated processing, and 1080p video. Read about this feisty compact here.
Two significant waves of change shook Nikon's popular user-friendly compact, the S8000, for the newly-announced Nikon Coolpix S8100 brings a 12.1-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and 1080p video to the party. Images can be captured at up to 10fps at full resolution, and it appears as though Nikon is aiming for speed, low light sensitivity, and compact size with the new Nikon Coolpix S8100.
"Our portfolio of compact digital cameras is designed to equip photographers of any level with the features and functions they will need for various shooting situations in a portable, compact body," said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. "The COOLPIX S8100 blends superior high-speed and low-light performance with a sleek and stylish design for a camera that is not only ready to go when you are, but one you are proud to show off."
According to Nikon, the Coolpix S8100 "not only features high-speed shooting at five full resolution frames at up to 10 frames-per-second (fps), but a pre-shooting cache that records up to two shots before the shutter-release is fully pressed." The Nikon Coolpix S8100's Sports mode records up to 120fps, and the camera features Subject Tracking in order to hone in on a moving subject. Along with the new back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the S8100 will be equipped with Nikon's latest EXPEED C2 image processing for enhanced performance, image quality, and HD video.
Carrying over the 10x optical zoom Nikkor ED glass lens with 30-300mm focal length, the Coolpix S8100 will allow shooters to optically zoom while recording 1080p video with stereo audio. Nikon promises a boost in low light sensitivity, which we would love to see, given the fact that the Nikon Coolpix S8000 had a regular old 14-megapixel CCD that was devoid of back-illuminated technology. At times, we felt a bit short-staffed when the lights went out, so hopefully the Nikon Coolpix S8100 will give us that great low light performance we crave.
The Nikon Coolpix S8100 will feature 4-Way VR Image Stabilization with ISO settings that reach 3200, and an advanced Backlight shooting function that features an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) feature, which basically takes a grouping of images at different exposures and blends them together for even tones throughout. Night Landscape mode operates similarly, blending five consecutive shots taken at fast shutter speeds into one for a sharp image in low light.
Just like we saw with the S8000, the Nikon Coolpix S8100 will feature the same 921,000-pixel LCD screen, which offers an excellent display. 17 Scene modes will suit beginners and Auto Mode junkies, and the Nikon Coolpix S8100 will have Nikon's Smart Portrait System, incorporating In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, improved Face-Priority AF, Blink Warning, Smile Timer and Skin Softening. We'll also be treated to the Creative Slider, which allowed us to alter the color hue of an image and the saturation. We also saw that the Nikon Coolpix S8100 has shooting effects like the Multi-shot, which takes a succession of 16 images and combines them into one shot via borders.
Price and Release Date
The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is set to ship in late September, along with the newly announced Nikon Coolpix P7000, for $300. Colors will include Black, Red, and Gold.
