Nikon Coolpix S80 is cooler than ever

By Mike Perlman, Wednesday 8 September 2010

Return of the Ashton Kutcher cam. What does the stylish Nikon Coolpix S80 bring to the catwalk this Fall? Find out in our full story.

Not much has changed for the Ashton Kutcher cam, and why mess with a sure thing? The Nikon Coolpix S70 was a top selling fashion compact, and Nikon expects the all new Nikon Coolpix S80 to follow in its footsteps. What Gucci freak could resist a 3.5-inch touch screen and sleek, sliding faceplate? The Nikon Coolpix S80 is also a slim little number, easily wedging into a designer jean pocket.

"Our consumers not only rely on our compact digital cameras for beautiful photos and brilliant technology, but also as a reflection of their personal style," said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. "The COOLPIX S80's slim, sophisticated design, touch screen technology and excellent features make it fun for consumers to capture high quality images and share their memorable moments."

Nikon Coolpix S80Nikon Coolpix S80 At just 0.7-inches, the Nikon Coolpix S80 is one of the slimmest options in its class, and the camera will be available in Red, Black, Blue, Pink, Gold, and Silver/Brown. The good news is that Nikon didn't skimp on the LCD, giving the Coolpix S80 a 3.5-inch ultra high-resolution 819,000-pixel OLED touch screen display for super thin fingers to tap on. The LCD will feature a wide viewing angle, brightness control, and an anti-glare coating.

Fun, consumer-friendly shooting modes is what the Nikon Coolpix S80 is all about. There's a Paint mode, allowing shooters to draw on images in Playback and retouch images with Color Options, Soft Focus, Selective Color, Cross Screen, Miniature Effect, and Fish-Eye Effect. Users can stamp their images with live animated stamps, and a new rating function enables shooters to rate their images on a scale of one to five stars. Users can then sort and search for images by rating.

Under the hood, the Nikon Coolpix S80 will pack in a 14.1-megapixel CCD sensor and 5x optical zoom Nikkor ED lens with wide-angle capability. However, Nikon's idea of 35mm as a wide-angles lens just doesn't cut it for us. The Coolpix S80 will feature Nikon's 5-Way VR Image Stabilization System with Optical and Hybrid VR, Motion Detection, ISO up to 6400, and Best Shot Selector. Best Shot Selector automatically captures 10 images and then picks the best one. Along with every new Nikon announced this year, the Nikon Coolpix S80 will have Nikon's latest Expeed C2 image processing, leading to outstanding image quality, according to Nikon.

Like most Consumer Nikon cameras, the Coolpix S80 will have 17 Scene modes and Easy Auto mode, which captures images based on the particular shooting environment. The S80 also gets Nikon's Smart Portrait System, employing In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, improved Face-Priority AF, Smile Timer, Blink Warning, Blink Proof and Skin Softening, just like the Nikon Coolpix S8100.

The Nikon Coolpix S80 will be available this Fall for $330.
