Nikon has released a pair of 5x optical zoom 12-megapixel performers with a new Skin Softening feature and full resolution high ISO capability. Read about the new Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570 here.

A new pair of mid-level Nikon compacts have barreled out of the starting gates today, and we're seeing some advanced functionality highlighted with the fresh releases of the Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570. Both 12-mega pixel compacts will offer Nikon's Smart Portrait System, which is a concoction of the new Skin Softening feature, Smile Shutter, Blink Warning, In-Camera Red-eye Fix, Face-Priority AF and D-Lighting. Both the Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570 will have 2.7-inch "Incredible Bright, Clear" LCDs and 28mm wide-angle 5x optical zoom Nikkor lenses.

The Nikon Coolpix S640 is geared to fulfill the cravings of the performance-hungry shooter looking for more than just a nice little suite of Scene modes. Following the Nikon Coolpix S630, the new Nikon Coolpix S640 strays from the ergonomically asymmetrical chassis design we came to appreciate and resembles a body that looks strikingly similar to the Casio Exilim EX-FC100. The Nikon Coolpix S640 is more compact than its predecessor, yet features a similar Control dial located in back.

We're all about the Nikon Coolpix S640's 4-way Optical VR Image Stabilization and ISO max of 6400. The best part about the new models is that the image resolution remains the same, even at the highest ISO, much like a higher-end compact. However, the Nikon Coolpix S570 features 4-way Electronic Image Stabilization and an ISO max of 3200. The Nikon Coolpix S640 also boasts a lightning quick 0.7-second startup time and rapid a rapid Autofocus performance, and we'll be sure to compare the Coolpix S640 to rivaling Canon PowerShots when we get our review unit.

Aside from a few feature upgrades on the Nikon Coolpix S640's behalf, both cameras share several core traits that cater to typical, everyday shooters. The Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570 will both have Scene Auto Selector and Subject tracking, which follows a subject and maintains focus, much like most of the new Panasonic lineup. There's been no jump to HD video yet, and both cameras will record standard-definition 640x480 clips.

The Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570 will both feature the latest Expeed processing, though the Coolpix S640 will have a 12.2-mega pixel sensor while the Coolpix S570 will have a 12.0-mega pixel sensor. That most likely means that the Coolpix S570 will have a slightly smaller sensor, perhaps a 1/2.5-inch CCD while the Coolpix S640 will probably feature a 1/2.7-inch chip. We also found that the Coolpix S640 will be able to shoot Macro shots from 0.8 inches and has a Quick Retouch feature that spruces up images on the fly.

The Nikon Coolpix S640 and Nikon Coolpix S570 will ship this September for $250 and $200, respectively. The Nikon Coolpix S640 will be available in Calm Black, Velour Red, Precious Pink and Pearl White while the Nikon Coolpix S570 will be offered in just plain old Black, Red, Blue and Pink.
