Speed is the name of the game for the Nikon Coolpix S5100. Check out Nikon's new budget point-and-shoot compact here.
Nikon unleashed a new budget-friendly point-and-shoot today, called the Nikon Coolpix S5100. Although there really aren't many earth-shattering innovations on the Coolpix S5100, the company has given a bit of a jolt to the camera's reflexes and swank factor, specializing in speed and style. The Nikon Coolpix S5100 is an attractive option for those looking to keep it cheap in the sub-$200 price range.
On the outside, the Nikon Coolpix S5100 is a "Sarah, Plain and Tall", exhibiting nothing out of the ordinary for a camera in its class. The Coolpix S5100 has a built-in flash, wrap-around shutter button zoom toggle, and small On/Off switch located on top. Even the 2.7-inch LCD is fairly standard, and we're thinking along the lines of a 230,000-pixel resolution, though Nikon hasn't divulged that information yet. However, it's almost impossible to find a camera in this price range with a higher LCD pixel count.
The hype over the Nikon Coolpix S5100 centers around the fact that the camera promises a startup time of under a second and a short shutter release time. Nikon has implemented its new Expeed C2 image processing on the 12.2-megapixel compact, and the Coolpix S5100's speedy operation is likely a result of this upgrade. There's also one-touch 720p HD video recording at 30fps, thanks to a dedicated Record button located on the back of the camera.
Just like the recently announced Nikon Coolpix S1100pj, the Nikon Coolpix S5100 has a 5x optical zoom, but the rest of its optics specs differ. We get 4-way VR Image Stabilization with an ISO 3200 max at full resolution, and a new tripod detection function that is found on the company's line of premium NIKKOR lenses. The tripod detection function works by selecting the ideal exposure, ISO, sensitivity, and shutter speed, depending on the shooting environment.
Nikon claims that the Coolpix S5100 will offer a handful of shooting options that enhance nighttime and low-light shooting with less blur and noise. Nikon says high ISO shots will be met with reduced grain, which is what we read about in practically every press release that crosses our desks. Nikon also throws in a motion detection function for active subjects and a flash control system to battle red eyes and blown highlights. With 18 Scene modes, the Nikon Coolpix S5100 should cover most ground, and there's also an Scene Auto Selector, Subject Tracking, and Nikon's Smart Portrait System.
