A digital camera and pocket projector in one? The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is here. Read our full coverage.
What happens when you throw a Nikon point-and-shoot Coolpix camera and a pocket-sized projector into a shaggin' wagon? The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is conceived, continuing the legacy that was initially rooted by the camera that started the projector craze last year, the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj. This year Nikon is boosting lumens and adding computer connectivity to its award-winning projector camera, as well as tossing a few other goodies into the mixing bowl.
"As the first to introduce a built-in projector in a compact digital camera, our consumers have come to expect innovation from Nikon's COOLPIX S-Series," said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. "In order to meet the evolving needs of our consumers, we have further advanced our award-winning technology, while delivering the high performance and shooting and sharing versatility they have come to trust."
That high performance and shooting versatility was strengthened by fortifying the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj's 14-lumen internal projector, boosting the brightness by 40%. The Coolpix S1100pj includes a built-in stand for setting the camera on a flat surface and features a three-inch touch-screen LCD. Of course, no projector camera would be complete without a built-in slide show with music and one-touch 720p HD video recording, which the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj brings to the yard.
But perhaps it's the camera's ability to connect to a computer via USB and project anything on its screen that really hooked us in. So, if you have to give an impromptu presentation and just happen to have your Nikon Coolpix S1100pj with you, Bob's your uncle. And with a 47-inch screen projection from 7 feet away, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj competes with other pocket projectors in this price range. However, keep in mind that the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is a camera before a pocket projector, so don't expect any other advanced features you'd want on a pocket model.
Some spec highlights include a three-inch 460,000-pixel touch-screen LCD, which is nice to hear that Nikon didn't settle for a bottom of the barrel 230K display. We've got a 14.1-megapixel sensor, though there's no word on the size of the chip (we're thinking along the lines of a 1/2.3-inch CCD), but we do get Nikon's new Expeed C2 image processing. The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj has a 5x optical zoom 28-140mm wide-angle NIKKOR glass lens and a 5-way VR Image Stabilization system, including ISO capability of 6400 for handheld low light shooting. We hope the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is a high ISO champ, since a lot of party animals and club hoppers will find this camera quite attractive.
As far as creativity is concerned, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj offers users the ability to access a Paint function that enables them to draw on projected images in real time. The Coopix S1100pj also offers the ability to Retouch, including the ability to deploy Soft, Selective Color, Cross Screen, Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect and Makeup Effect. Stamps can also be applied to images in order to pump up the entertainment value. If Auto mode isn't enough, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is stocked with 17 different Scene modes including Subject Tracking, Easy Auto Mode and Nikon's Smart Portrait System.
