HP's Photosmart R927 offers 8 megapixels, a 3X optical zoom, and more image-manipulation functions than almost any digicam on the market. Will its creative modes unleash your inner artist?

Review summary of the HP Photosmart R927:
         Gallery »
HP Photosmart R927 The HP Photosmart R927 isn't the most chic digicam on the market, but it takes very good photos and offers tons of scene modes and in-camera tweaks. Photos looked clear and vibrant overall, and its Design Gallery improves snaps before printing and provides creative controls not found elsewhere. Release: March 2006. Price: $280.

Full HP Photosmart R927 Review:
The R927 is the premiere model in hp's Photosmart line, and its biggest draw is the ability to alter your pictures far beyond correcting red eyes and color. With the R927, your photos can look like comics and even slim you down.

Image quality - Very good

Images retained bright colors and crisp details in a variety of lighting conditions. the 3X optical zoom is a bit scant yet acceptable, and we didn't experience any purple fringing or blur in our test shots. High-contrast photos were easily remedied thanks to hp's Adaptive Light Bracketing feature, which transforms an image into three options: one with adaptive lighting off, another with it on low, and a third with it on high. Images adjusted to low looked the best in many instances with background details becoming clearer and shadows lifted. The R927 also shoots VGA video at 24 FPS; footage turned out a little grainy and should only be used for quick clips.

Ease of use - Very good

Besides its slightly bulky body, the camera boasts well-sized, easy-to-reach controls along the top. the zoom, a four-way navigation button, and a large three-inch LCD fill the back. The Photosmart R927 offers an impressive collection of 17 scene choices, plus HP's Design Gallery. it offers everything from turning images into watercolor paintings to a Slimming mode that automatically removes ten pounds. Switching between modes and altering images was easy. we liked that you could edit without having to fire up Photoshop. Our only gripe with the R927's design is the bottom cover. opening it takes some force and it's difficult to swap SD Cards if you're shooting in a hurry.

Price and availability

The HP Photosmart R927 will start selling for $280 () in March 2006.
