Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR Will Walk the Runway in AugustBy Mike Perlman, Wednesday 21 July 2010

Another model hits the runway, and it's the Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR all touchscreen fashion cam. Read the full scoop here.

The Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR struts its stuff as the company's all touch-screen fashion compact, but only brings an Advanced EXR sensor to the catwalk. We reviewed the Z700EXR, which was Fujifilm's first stab at the touch-screen stylecam market, and for the most part the sexy faceplate slider proved to be the typical digital imaging diva we expected it to be. We're not talking a rabid Naomi Campbell, but more along the lines of a subdued Kate Moss.

Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR Fashion Cam

Let's look into the Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR's main improvement. This half of the year brings an "EXR sensor with phase detection pixels to enable features like Hybrid High Speed Auto Focus, plus Intelligent Image Stabilization for great anti-blur protection. And those features, coupled with the highly responsive touch screen interface, give fashion-conscious consumers the ability to take photos that look as good as the camera does," according to David Troy, director of marketing, Consumer Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM North America Corporation.

What in the name of Tyra Banks is Phase Detection pixel technology!? According to Fujifilm, the sensor has the ability to intelligently decide between two focusing systems on the camera: Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF. Phase Detection is for high-contrast subjects placed in the center of the frame while Contrast AF is for dark scenes. The Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR will automatically select the focus system based on the current surroundings and focus the camera within a purported 0.158 seconds. We can't wait to see that!

For navigation, the Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR is all touchscreen with a 460,000-pixel 3.5-inch LCD equipped with Dual Direction GUI and Dual Image Display. Dual Direction GUI means that the menu button will follow users depending on how they orient the camera and Dual Image Display allows users to view images via a split screen for faster review.

Core specs include a 12-megapixel Super CCD EXR sensor, 5x optical zoom Fujinon lens with a 36-180mm focal length, and ISO levels that reach 1600. We're unhappy with the fact that Fujifilm didn't incorporate a wide-angle lens on the Finepix Z800EXR, especially since this is a camera that will be used in close quarters with lots of portraits. The camera is very slim, measuring an anorexic 16.9mm thin and flashes its style with a classic LED "Z" that illuminates in conjunction with the opening of the camera's face plate.

The Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR will incorporate Fujifilm's Intelligent Image Stabilization, which promises "further improved image quality with reduced blurring and noise in still pictures and even when shooting movies at the full 5x optical zoom or in very low-light." Just like the newly announced Fujifilm Finepix F300EXR, the Z800EXR relies on the Super CCD sensor to compensate for handshake.

720p video makes an appearance on the Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR, but it's Motion-JPEG, so image quality will equal that of the Fujifilm Finepix F300EXR. There's no word on the ability to zoom while recording video, but we know that the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR was not capable of zooming while recording video. Of course, Fujifilm offers the new HD Player, which is an optional accessory that allows users to control their HD footage taken with the Z800EXR via a remote control on an HD television.

The Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR has Face Detection with the ability to record up to 8 faces at once and the option to record a name for future recognition. The Z800EXR also employs the Picture Search Tool, allowing users to search for images by Face Recognition data. Users can also create their own Photobooks using Photobook Assist right inside the camera as well.

Other features include Fujifilm's EXR technology suite, Touch Shot (touch to focus), Super Intelligent Flash, Pet Detection, and Easy Web Upload. The Fujifilm Finepix Z800EXR will be available in Red, Beige, Black, and Pink, if that clues us into the camera's intended market.
