Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR Review

By Mike Perlman, Saturday 8 May 2010

It's hot, it's got a giant touch screen LCD, and it's equipped with EXR technology. Check out the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR review here.

Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR Overview

Do you like fine wine? Parties? EXR Pixel Fusion technology? Then the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR might be right up your Coco Chanel. Fujifilm joined the ranks of 720p touch-screen fashion cams this year with the introduction of the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR. It's got a 1/2-inch 12-megapixel CCD, 5x optical zoom, and 3.5-inch 16:9 aspect touch screen LCD. Portable, sexy, and alluring with its touch screen, the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR will draw potential buyers from the get go. The nifty thing is that the touch screen is actually not that bad, image quality is equal to the recently-reviewed Fujifilm Finepix F80EXR, and the Z700EXR has a decent spectrum of shooting features.

Shooting with the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR

Not only does the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR share the same EXR shooting modes and Dynamic Range adjustment with the Finepix F80EXR, but the camera takes full advantage of the touch screen LCD with Touch to Shoot, which allowed us to touch any part of the screen in order for a shot to be snapped. We get Fujifilm's color suite, including Velvia (Vivid) and Provia (Standard), Exposure Compensation, ISO up to 3200, lots of tasty White Balance presets, and a bunch of Scene shooting modes such as Natural Light, Night Mode (which takes advantage of the 4-second shutter), and Landscape.

Screen responsiveness was not too shabby at all, though we could have used a nicer display. The Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR's screen just looked noisy all the time, kind of reminding us of Casio's screens. We need a definite resolution boost there, the ability to zoom while recording video, and better low light capability—the F80EXR can shoot down to an 8-second shutter while the Z700EXR can only reach a 4-second shutter.

Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR Still Image Quality

Aside from low light—and that's because of the shutter speed truncation—the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR exhibited image quality that was tantamount to the Finepix F80EXR, and that's most likely because both cameras share the same sensor and processing. We still missed the performance of the Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR and opted for the Fujifilm Finepix S2550HD over both the F80EXR and Z700EXR, but image quality was still some of the best in its class.

Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR Video Quality

The only thing that could make the Fujifilm Finepix F80EXR's 720p HD video quality worse would be the inability to zoom while recording, which is a characteristic of the Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR. Motion-JPEG is a bad route to go with on a consumer compact, and Fujifilm really needs to up the ante, especially with Panasonic's AVCHD Lite and Canon's H.264 MOV files. Standard Definition to us, especially in a world where 1080p is the next inevitable thing.
