The 10-megapixel Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR is a major improvement on the Finepix F60fd. Read the full article to find out why.
It's that time of year for Fujifilm, and the Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR looks to be the most enticing model out of the company's newest compact lineup. And why is that you ask? Well, Fujifilm basically destroyed the Finepix F60fd mold and gave the new Finepix F70 EXR a slim, sexy chassis. Sleek style is merely skimming the surface, for the Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR manages to cram in a whopping 10x optical zoom Fujinon lens and EXR technology, just like the Fujifilm Finepix F200 EXR, one of our favorite compacts of the year. We loved the Finepix F200 EXR's performance, but it was quite an ugly thing with a limiting zoom. The Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR seems to pick up the slack, though it has a smaller 1/2-inch CCD, which is still bigger than most compacts in its class.
Fujifilm said they incorporated EXR technology into the new Finepix F70 EXR to compensate for the smaller sensor, but the camera is only capable of a 10-megapixel max resolution and its sensor is still fairly large compared to the competition. Fujifilm is just one of those brands that will not settle for anything below greatness regarding certain models. For some reason, their high-end point-and-shoot compacts tend to be winners, and we can't wait to see what the Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR is capable of as soon as we get our hands on a testing unit. We had great success with the Fujifilm Finepix F200 EXR, and no other contending model could touch its image quality. Not only does the 10x optical zoom lens have a 27-270mm focal range, but it features a Super EBC oating to reduce ghosting and flare.
However, the Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR brings a few new technologies to the table, including Pro Focus Mode and Pro Low-Light Mode. Fujifilm is tap-dancing on a limb by comparing the Finepix F70 EXR's image quality to that of a high-end DSLR, based solely off the performance of these new modes, but we will be the judges of that soon. Pro Focus Mode combines two or three burst shots together and synthesizes a crisp shot of the subject against a defocused background and foreground, much like a wide aperture portrait shot. In Pro Low-Light Mode, the Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR takes bursts of four high-sensitivity images and applies Pixel Fusion Technology in quick succession. All four images are then blended together in order to create one image with a boosted exposure and low noise levels. Yet another stop along the infoSync testing highway.
The Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR will feature several EXR shooting modes that cater to Dynamic Range, High Sensitivity and Low Noise scenarios, just like the Finepix F200 EXR. There's also an EXR Auto mode that will automatically select between Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Backlit Portrait, Night, and Night Portrait. We also get the tasty Film Simulation modes, including Velvia/Vivid, PROVIA/Standard, ASTIA/Soft, Black and White and Sepia. The good news is that the Dynamic Range can now be set to 800% in any Film Simulation mode. We get the Super Intelligent Flash again this time around, but the Finepix F70 EXR will feature a new 2.7-inch High Contrast LCD that offers up to a 160-degree viewing angle both vertically and horizontally. The Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR will also feature Dual Image Stabilization and the latest Face Detection, which is capable of detecting up to 10 faces at once.
The Fujifilm Finepix F70 EXR is expected to ship in August for $280.
