Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS Review

By Mike Perlman, Tuesday 2 March 2010

The king of the touchscreen castle has arrived! The Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS rocked our socks. Read on for exclusive videos and images.

The 14.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS has solidified its place within the point-and-shoot realm as the most successful fully touch-screen model to date. While Sony has been dabbling with touch-screen technology on its Cyber-shots for years and Panasonic has toiled with hybrid designs in the recent past, Canon just sat quietly against the wall and observed the entire time. This is a company that waits until it has a sure thing and then pounces on all within its path. Well, aside from the most responsive, technologically advanced, and intuitive touch-screen menu we've seen on a digital compact in infoSync history, the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS also produced impressive image quality and provided us with plenty of shooting options for a point-and-shoot. Check out our hands on video for a closer look at the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS.

Shooting with the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS

In all honesty, we were able to shoot approximately 40% quicker, thanks to the stellar touch-screen menu layout. Canon also threw in some new modes like "Miniature Effect" and "Fisheye Effect", which were more of a novelty. However, the low light performance in their "Low Light" shooting mode—which is just a 3.5-megapixel ISO6400 image—exhibited less noise than we expected. The benefit of a 15-second shutter speed in "Long Shutter" mode always delighted us, and the classic "Color Swap" and "Color Accent" modes made their anticipated arrivals with much support from us.

Face Priority shooting registered instantly, categorizing a face in the foreground as the primary focus, and a face in the background as a secondary focus. Although we didn't get a full on Manual mode with Shutter Speed and Aperture control, the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS didn't really need it. Touch Auto Focus was surprisingly accurate, and the 24mm wide-angle lens made it easy to cram everything into the picture in tight places. Take a gander at our image samples.
