Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Review

By Mike Perlman, Wednesday 3 March 2010

This tiny party animal is ready to hit the dance floor. Check out our review of the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS, complete with videos and images.

Style and size fuse together in swanky harmony with the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS, one of the smallest compacts available on the market today. The camera is not an earth-shattering addition to the vast sea of ultra compacts, though the 720p video and new shooting modes kept us on our toes. With a 14-megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom, focus tracking, and HDMI output, Canon has packed a considerable amount into this tiny dancer. We weren't keen on the miniscule zoom tab mechanism and longed for the ability to use the optical zoom while recording in video mode. Check out our video tour of the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS.

Shooting with the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS

Like the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS, we were given "Fisheye," "Miniature," "Low Light," and plenty of other shooting presets to warm the hearts of camerphobes and beginners near and far. However, the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS offered Exposure, White Balance, ISO, and we could alter the shutter speed up to 15 seconds in "Long Shutter" mode. Face Detection in did an admirable job in small crowds, but couldn't handle any angry mobs. Focus Tracking functioned just like the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS, staying glued to its target unless that target pulled a Roadrunner and bolted across the frame.

We were impressed with the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS's image quality, however, we felt that it matched the company's previous generation of compact PowerShots. So, the next wave of PowerShots should up the ante in the image quality department, especially since the Fujifilm Finepix F80EXR is on the prowl. All in all, the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS offered a great menu system that was easy to jump around in, though we were spoiled with the all touch-screen PowerShot SD3500 IS, Canon's flagship PowerShot compact that has raised the bar to an intimidating level for its peers. Check out our image and video samples, shot side-by-side with the Canon PowerShot SD3500 IS and feel free to compare.
