HTC will add Sense features as enhancements to its upcoming Windows Phone 7 smartphones.
When Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 7 earlier this year, it became clear that manufacturers will be allowed to add features to the Windows Phone 7 experience, though not at the expense of built-in Windows Phone 7 elements like we've to some extent have seen recently with Windows Mobile smartphones.
Drew Bamford, Manager for HTC's UI Experience Design Team, recently told Forbes that HTC will offer Windows Phone 7 smartphones with Sense features. In fact, the entire point of Windows Phone 7 is to have a solid set of core features and then offer the ability for both manufacturers and third-party developers to enhance the overall experience.
For instance major carriers have always made enhancements (or tried to make enhancements) to Windows Mobile through the years, so the unusual part of the Windows Mobile effort as a whole has really been for instance HTC's growing interface layer in recent years. As such, Windows Phone 7 will basically represent a return to the original idea of offering enhancements.
It's also worth noting that Microsoft plans to further develop the Windows Phone platform aggressively, and most importantly, Windows Phone 7 actually acknowledges that consumers do exist from day one. Of course, when knowing that the OS stems from a deep corporate culture, we assume there'll be more than a few opportunities for HTC Sense as well as third-party extensions.
Lastly, it's worth noting that Windows Phone 7 won't push the limits as far as gaming is concerned this holiday season for instance (part of the aggressive development mentioned above), but rather offer developers a set of key elements that Microsoft feels will be "sufficient" to get things moving in the right direction. It'll take time for Microsoft to get the consumer wheels rolling for real.
