Verizon iPhone 5 Could See Major Launch Effort

By Mike Perlman, Tuesday 5 July 2011

The iPhone 5 is headed to Verizon Wireless as a smartphone with global roaming capabilities. A leak now indicates a major launch effort.

Apple is reportedly expecting Verizon Wireless' version of the iPhone 5 to become a major success. According to DigiTimes, Pegatron Technology this week received an order for 15 million CDMA iPhone 5 units, which will be spread across CDMA carriers, Verizon Wireless included. It's unknown whether Sprint will get it too, though Apple is known to be testing an iPhone on Sprint's network.

Sources told DigiTimes that it'll start shipping in September 2011, and it's going to be an iPhone 4S-grade device. Verizon Wireless has already confirmed several times that their next iPhone will have global roaming capabilities for frequent business travelers, something many other smartphones on the carrier already offer.

DigiTimes last week reported that the iPhone 5 would be announced in September, followed by a release in early October. Obviously, Pegatron Technology would need to start shipping units in September to meet an October launch. A Morgan Stanley analyst recently claimed that the iPhone 5 will go into production in August, but the wheels are now clearly in motion for production to begin sooner rather than later.

While sources last week said that Apple would have 6-7 million iPhone 5 units at launch, today's leak does not specify how many of the 15 million CDMA units will be available at launch, or whether the former number is an estimate for the GSM iPhone 5 launch. Nonetheless, the CDMA order indicates a major launch effort for the device on Verizon Wireless.

To put it in perspective, Pegatron Technology shipped less than 4 million CDMA iPhone 4 units in Q1 2011. Of course, Verizon Wireless is no longer the only CDMA carrier to offer the iPhone, and the initial 10-million order Pegatron received for the CDMA iPhone 4 turned out to be too optimistic, but Apple and its CDMA carrier partners clearly aim high this fall.
