The budget-friendly Samsung Intercept QWERTY smartphone powered by Android 2.1 is now available on Sprint.
The budget-friendly Samsung Intercept is now available on Sprint, selling for $200 with a two-year contract. A $100 mail-in rebate will be given when signing up for a qualifying plan. If you think you've seen the Intercept before, it's worth noting that it succeeds last year's Samsung Moment.
Samsung Intercept brings Android 2.1 to Sprint's mid-range lineup
The Samsung Moment was a powerful mid-range smartphone when released in late 2009, and it recently received an upgrade to Android 1.6. However, if you're in the market for a budget-friendly QWERTY smartphone on Sprint this summer, you should forget about the Samsung Moment and lock your target on the Samsung Intercept. The latter will give you Android 2.1 and a more compact smartphone design.
Samsung Intercept vs. Samsung Epic 4G
In order to differentiate itself from the Samsung Epic 4G, Sprint's new high-end QWERTY Android phone to be released later this year, the Samsung Intercept has received a 3.2-inch HVGA AMOLED touchscreen as opposed to the Epic 4G's 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED touchscreen. There's also a standard 3.2-megapixel camera as opposed to the Epic 4G's 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording.
If you can live with the Samsung Epic 4G's large screen and high-end features, we highly recommend spending the extra $100 it'll cost you. However, if you're looking for a compact and budget-friendly QWERTY smartphone for the sake of messaging and social networking features, the Samsung Intercept should deliver an all around good experience.
The Samsung Intercept will provide access to Facebook, Flickr and Twitter out-of-box, as well as access to personal and corporate e-mail. Users can also download apps, games and widgets from Android Market (60,000 and counting). There's also a full suite of Google services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail and YouTube.
