The stylish, pocket-friendly Nokia 6233 3G phone arrives with a broad set of features and a modest price tag; join Jørgen Sundgot as he ventures to find out what it's made of.

Review summary of the Nokia 6233:
Gallery »
Nokia 6233 Although displaying Nokia's usual excellence in the departments of voice calls and messaging, Nokia's 6233 has several shortcomings which hamper various aspects of its use as a 3G phone. Among these, the lack of video calling and a poor browser affect use of the phone itself, while the omission of a USB cable means laptop users will be unable to reach maximize 3G bandwidth. It does, however, have good Bluetooth performance for those who prefer the unwired approach, and several other appealing features such as outstanding VGA video recording, an FM radio for aural entertainment and a very decent screen. Release: June 2006. Price: $300.
Pros: Excellent for calls and messaging; quality display; impressive VGA resolution video recording
Cons: No bundled USB cable; limited browser negates full-page surfing; poor photo quality

Full review of the Nokia 6233:
Sporting a stylish, classic exterior and snappy overall performance, Nokia's 6233 is a compact and peppy contender which squares off agains handsets such as Sony Ericsson's W900i spinner and LG's U890 clamshell.

Browsing - Good

3G and a nice high-resolution screen set the 6233 up for a pleasant surfing experience, but while the built-in offering handles mobile web sites with ease, it unfortunately fails miserably at any attempt of reformatting full-size pages.

Laptop sidekick - Good

One would think EDGE, 3G and excellent signal reception would spell promise for the 6233, but the lack of a bundled USB cable leaves Bluetooth the only alternative for laptop connectivity; effectively halving data transfer speeds.

Messaging - Excellent

Large, comfortable numerical keys and a decidedly decent navipad combines with rapid access to creating sms, mms and e-mail messages to render the 6233 bliss for text-heavy users; it even supports yet-to-come video messages.

Calling - Very good

Near-flawless voice calls? Check. MP3 ringtones? Check. Supports Bluetooth handsfree and headsets? Check. Outstanding signal reception? Check. Highly legible loudspeaker? Check. Vibrating alert? Check. Video calling? Whoops.

Battery life - Good

Clocking in at 3 hours of talk time and 10 days of standby, the battery life of the 6233 hovers in the average range for use and offers slightly better standby time as compared to its closest competitors.

Camera - Good

A contrast-filled experience, the 2 MP camera of the 6233 has a knack for overexposure and is highly susceptible to camera shake, yet still manages to shoot outstanding video at VGA resolution. Also on board: Bluetooth printing.
