The Motorola Droid X will be two weeks old on Thursday, and it seems like there's still a significant pre-order backlog.
The BGR reports that Apple now sells the iPhone 4 on a first come, first served basis only. As of July 16, the company had sold 3 million units. Another sales boost is expected when the iPhone 4 goes on sale in 17 more countries on July 30.
The Motorola Droid X for Verizon Wireless has followed a similar launch path as the iPhone 4 though, as an analyst recently told Barron's that he had found "no supply available at retail as all production is still going to fill 'pre-order' backlog". As of July 23, one week after the original launch, the promised home delivery date for the Droid X was August 5.
Motorola will report June quarter results on Thursday, exactly two weeks after the Droid X launch. What everybody really wants to hear on Thursday, is naturally how many Droid X units the company has sold to date. Hopefully Motorola will tell us all exactly that.
During the iPhone 4 press conference earlier this month, Apple revealed that the Motorola Droid X wasn't expected to become a significant competitor to the iPhone 4 due to its big 4.3-inch screen. About a month ago, we recommended the Droid X as a smartphone primarily for video enthusiasts ourselves, and the Droid Incredible as the more mainstream high-end smartphone to buy on Verizon Wireless.
HTC has just recently made a move in Europe to increase the supply of the Droid Incredible moving forward, which has faced periodic delays due to AMOLED screen shortages ever since the introduction. These delays may have enabled the Motorola Droid X - literally packed with multimedia power and functionality - to attract a more mainstream type of users too.
