The Motorola Droid X today finally got an official release date on Verizon Wireless.
The Motorola Droid X for Verizon Wireless will be one of the hottest smartphones to be released this summer, and the release date is finally official: July 15. It'll cost $300 with a two-year contract and a $100 mail-in rebate will be given when signing up for a qualifying plan.
Motorola Droid X gets Blockbuster video on-demand
Boasting a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen with a FWVGA resolution (854 by 480 pixels) and an HDMI port, the Motorola Droid X is built to handle advanced multimedia. As such, the Droid X will come pre-loaded with a Blockbuster application for video rentals and purchases. In order to work seamlessly with HDTVs, the Motorola Droid X is also DLNA enabled. The Droid X will also come pre-loaded with several other content apps.
Another highlight for the Motorola Droid X is its 8-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording. There's also an internal 8GB NAND Flash memory for storage of videos, photos and music, while a microSD memory slot supports up to 32GB cards (16GB card included in the sales package). When the Motorola Droid X receives an upgrade to Android 2.2 later this year, applications downloaded from Android Market (65,000 applications and counting) can also be stored on the phone's flash memory and microSD cards.
Another benefit of Android 2.2 will be Flash 10.1 support. The Motorola Droid X will be one of the first smartphones in the world to get this plug-in. There's no specific timeframe beyond "the latter half of the summer" on when the Droid X will receive Android 2.2, but we can imagine it's a high-priority.
Like many other new Android phones, the Motorola Droid X will also offer Mobile Hotspot functionality. For an additional $20 per month (on top of the $30 per month smartphone data plan), you can connect up to 5 devices via Wi-Fi and share your EV-DO connection with these.
Motorola Droid X boasts multi-touch keyboard
If you're a fast texter it's worth noting that the Motorola Droid X will come equipped with a multi-touch software keyboard, meaning that you can hit a second button on the on-screen keyboard while you're still holding down the first button. The Droid X will also come pre-loaded with the popular Swype technology for faster text input.
As far as messaging capabilities, the Motorola Droid X powered by Android 2.2 will offer both Exchange and Gmail for business users. Corporate users will also get push e-mail, widgets that stream messages to the home screen, filter widgets to differentiate work and home e-mail, corporate directory and Global look-up along with a unified calendar for Enterprise and sync with Google Calendar. Additionally, security protocols will allow remote password control and wipe via Exchange server.
Last, but not least, the Motorola Droid X will be powered by a 1GHz OMAP 3630 45nm processor. It'll be one of the fastest processors on the market when making its debut in the Motorola Droid X. There's also an integrated PowerVR SGX GPU. The Droid X also boasts 3 microphones, for improved noise cancellation as well as improved audio on video recording.
