iPhone 5 Seems Locked for September Release

By Sindre Lia, Tuesday 26 July 2011

The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced in late August and released during the first half of September.

There's been some uncertainty whether Apple would release the iPhone 5 in September or October, but it looks like we may at least have gotten an official confirmation about it now entering the production stage. Apple's CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, said during an earnings call that "a future product transition that we're not going to talk about today", is expected to affect the revenue potential during the current quarter negatively.

There's little doubt that he's talking about the iPhone 5 powered by iOS 5 and iCloud. That said, like we pointed out recently, there's a pretty good chance that the iPhone 4 and 3GS will continue selling like hot cakes this quarter too. However, that doesn't interfere with the fact that the Apple CFO says that a production transition vital to the company's revenue numbers is on its way.

During another earnings call this month, a Verizon Wireless executive said that a Verizon iPhone 5 had been expected to be released this summer. The carrier sold 2.3 million iPhone 4 units in Q2, which is almost twice the number of 4G LTE smartphone units sold in the same quarter. Verizon has stated that their next iPhone will offer global roaming capabilities, like found in the recently released Droid 3 by Motorola.

While there's no word on whether Verizon Wireless is now expecting the iPhone 5 to be released in late Q3, the BGR today reports that AT&T prepares to launch their GSM version of the iOS 5 smartphone during the first half of September. A proven source has told the Boy Genius that AT&T is asking managers to finish employee training in order to have employees available for the influx of foot traffic expected in September.

According to the Boy Genius, the next-generation iPhone will be officially announced at the end of August, with a launch to follow in the first half of September. We'll keep our fingers crossed!
