iPhone 5 May Complement iPhone 4 and 3GS

By Sindre Lia, Monday 18 July 2011

Sources are saying that the iPhone 5 may complement the current iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, while the latter will also be available as a prepaid phone.

Apple currently has the low-end and mid-range smartphone market covered by the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, respectively. However, the Boy Genius now reports that Cupertino will target the high-end market with the iPhone 5 this fall, while the current models will continue catering to their respective markets. Obviously, we all want to see Apple stepping up its game and start competing in the high-end market again.

How far Apple will go in stepping up its game this fall, however, will rely heavily on what type of smartphone the iPhone 5 will be. You see, the BGR sources aren't sure whether the iPhone 5 will be the model with a brand new design and curved glass screen (think Nokia N9 and Nexus S 4G), or whether it'll be the iPhone 4S with a dual-core A5 chipset that has appeared in hands-on photos previously.

The Boy Genius himself believes that the iPhone 4S is the smartphone to expect this fall, and be believes it'll be offered by all four major U.S. carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile). Interestingly, a BGR source claims that the iPhone 3GS will also be available as a prepaid option selling for $350.

In fact, if it turns out that Apple has been able to score deals with the major carriers as far as offering the iPhone 3GS as a $350 prepaid option, it would be more exciting than anything else from a market perspective. While prepaid smartphones are gradually appearing, a prepaid iPhone 3GS would pave the way for a whole new category of Android smartphones going prepaid too.

For years, the carriers have been unwilling to for instance offer Nokia Nseries devices as prepaid smartphones, despite the fact that they were all produced as such devices. In other words, this could also become a great opportunity for Nokia to push higher-end Symbian devices in the U.S. during the transition to Windows Phone. We'll keep our fingers crossed!
