HP TouchPad Could Get 7-inch Version in August

By Sindre Lia, Friday 24 June 2011

The HP TouchPad could get a 7-inch version to be released in August, and HP reportedly aims to ship 3 million tablets combined in 2011.

HP's TouchPad is only a week away from being shipped to WebOS fans, the 9.7-inch Wi-Fi version that is. In addition to the upcoming AT&T 3G version, a report coming out of Taiwan suggests that the HP TouchPad will be available in a 7-inch flavor as soon as August of this year. We'll keep our fingers crossed for 4G connectivity too (like found in the HTC EVO View 4G released today), though August is probably too early for that to happen.

According to the BGR, Taiwan Economic News reports that a source working at Inventec has said that HP has ordered between 400,000 and 450,000 tablets per month from Inventec. As part of that order, there is supposed to be a yet-to-be-announced 7-inch TouchPad. The Taiwanese newspaper believes that this TouchPad will be released in August.

In related news, Pre Central reports that the AT&T TouchPad is working its way through the FCC. An official release date and pricing have yet to be announced, but it looks like it could be released just in time to take on connected versions of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - perhaps the most popular 10.1-inch Android tablet to be released this summer.

HP aims to ship approximately 3 million tablets in 2011, according to a source, and it remains to be seen whether the company will be able to sell them all by the end of the year. The iPad brand is strong, so it'll basically be a matter of placing working versions of the TouchPad next to it in as many stores as possible (we all remember how the original Palm Pre alienated customers).
