Now that Nokia and Microsoft are working closely on mobile office features, it seems like RIM has acquired DataViz to give BlackBerry a productivity boost.
For nearly a decade, there was no such thing as out-of-box Exchange support in Nokia's business smartphones. Today, it's hard to come across a Nokia smartphone of any kind that doesn't offer Exchange support. In not a too distant future, productivity features based on Microsoft technology will become a vital part of Nokia smartphones too. Like Windows Mobile users, Nokia users will soon get everything they need out-of-box for free.
According to CrackBerry, it seems like RIM has acquired DataViz, one of the largest independent makers of Exchange and Office solutions, based on Microsoft licenses, of course. We're not sure why RIM has acquired DataViz rather than working directly with Microsoft, but we guess there's a strategy behind it.
For instance, DataViz recently revealed that Documents To Go would not be offered on Palm WebOS devices. Given Microsoft will soon dominate on both Windows and Symbian smartphones, we assume DataViz under the wings of RIM will use the extra time on hand moving forward on BlackBerry development.
When RIM's acquistion of Torch Mobile became official, it also became clear that Torch Mobile would focus all its efforts on BlackBerry development. We don't know whether that will also be the case for DataViz once the acquisition becomes official, but now that the cat is out of the bag, we guess the company will inform its customers about what's going to happen next pretty soon.
