Preparing for 2011's many battles, Apple has now changed the focus of the App Store where quality will increasingly play the key role.
Apple today pulled the developer restrictions that went into effect earlier this year. At the same time, the company released formal App Store Review Guidelines. Engadget has got their hands on the latter, which reveals that Apple is about to change the focus of the App Store.
Moving forward, Apple will focus heavily on application quality. It's a smart but also very necessary move as Microsoft and Palm, the oldest players in the app game, are openly saying that they aim to do what Apple did better than them, only with greater focus on quality. In addition, both Microsoft and Palm are also heavily focusing on service integration.
Android, which has been strongly service-driven to date, is also about to get more serious about apps. Google is also reportedly working on a refined interface for Android 3.0 as well as being close to roll out something related to music in the cloud - likely of the disruptive kind.
Very soon, Apple will face competition on an entirely new level. The company has rapidly opened up iOS through new APIs and improved support for third-party services to boost App Store growth. Only time will tell whether what's been done to date, and what's been changed today, will be sufficient for Apple to be one of the app leaders in 2011.
