Apple has now released iOS 4.1 for iPhone, providing a range of new features and bug fixes.
Apple today rolled out iOS 4.1 for iPhone, one of the most significant iOS software upgrades between major releases to date. If you currently own the iPhone 4, you'll for instance get the ability to shoot High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos and the ability to upload HD videos via Wi-Fi networks. iOS 4.1 also brings TV show rentals, Game Center integration as well as bug fixes for the iPhone 4 (such as proximity sensor and Bluetooth fixes) and iPhone 3G.
Using High Dynamic Range technology, the iPhone 4's built-in 5-megapixel BSI CMOS camera will aim to provide improved image quality. While the iPhone 4 already provide pretty good image quality, there's no doubt that the new HDR mode will give image quality another boost. Such technology especially comes in handy in smartphone cameras, which tend to struggle a lot with exposure - and exposure is exactly what HDR technology aims to even out by taking three separate images and morph them together.
As mentioned above, iOS 4.1 will also bring Game Center, Apple's new effort in social gaming. Game Center supports multi-player games, where you can challenge other iOS users, whether it is people you know or people that Game Center will automatically match you with. This is a feature that will go head to head with Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 this fall.
As part of the new iTunes 10, iOS 4.1 for iPhone also enables TV show rentals as well as Ping integration. Ping is a new social music service in iTunes, which basically makes it easy to follow your friends as well as your favorite artists as far as all music and concert-related activity is concerned. The Ping experience is inspired by services such as Facebook and Zune.
All in all, Apple has made several significant steps in the right direction with iOS 4.1 and iTunes 10. For more on the iPhone 4, check out our full review here.
