Apple recently announced that the company had sold 120 million iOS devices to date. Check out the numbers behind the numbers inside.
During a recent press conference, Apple revealed that the company had sold 120 million iOS powered devices to date. While they didn't reveal the sub totals for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch respectively, it's however not difficult to make rather accurate estimates.
In April 2010, Apple officially announced that 50 million iPhone and 35 million iPod touch units had been sold, or a total of 85 million iOS devices. In June, the total number of iOS devices sold had reached 100 million. By the end of August, the number had reached 120 million.
Here's an estimated breakdown of the latter number:
iPhone sales
By Apr 8: 50M (Official)
By Aug 31: 67M (Estimate)
iPod touch sales
By Apr 8: 35M (Official)
By Aug 31: 48M (Estimate)
iPad sales
By May 31: 2M (Official)
By Aug 31: 5M (Estimate)
Apple has seen strong growth in sales this year, however, a significant part of new iOS device purchases are expected to have been made by people who already own one or more iOS devices. In other words, the number of active iOS users should be well below 100 million on a worldwide scale, which basically means that Apple's reach may not have increased dramatically this year. At least not compared to Android, where a lot of people are first-time buyers.
