iOS 4.1 for iPhone will be available next week, bringing bug fixes, camera improvements, TV show rentals and social gaming to iPhone users.
Apple today announced iOS 4.1 for iPhone, which will be available as a free download next week. Highlights include the ability to shoot High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos, HD video upload over Wi-Fi, TV show rentals, Game Center support as well as bug fixes for the iPhone 4 (such as the proximity sensor) and iPhone 3G.
By enabling HDR technology, the iPhone camera will be able to take three separate images and morph them together in order to attain an even overall exposure. Such technology especially comes in handy in smartphone cameras, which tend to struggle a lot with exposure. The iPhone camera will also be able to upload HD videos directly to YouTube via Wi-Fi when iOS 4.1 has been installed.
iOS 4.1 will also bring support for TV show rentals and Game Center. Game Center, which was announced as part of iOS 4.0, enables social gaming for iOS devices. Game Center supports multi-player games, where you can challenge other iOS users, whether it be people you know or people that Game Center will automatically match you with. Needless to say, Game Center will soon be an important part of the iOS experience, and go head to head with Xbox Live for Windows Phone 7 this fall.
As part of the new iTunes 10, iPhone users will also get Ping integration. Ping is a new social music service in iTunes, which basically makes it easy to follow your friends as well as your favorite artists as far as all music and concert-related activity is concerned. The Ping experience is inspired by services such as Facebook and Zune, and will, like the Game Center experience, soon be an important part of the iOS experience.
All in all, Apple has made several significant steps in the right direction with iOS 4.1 and iTunes, which should benefit iPhone users greatly. When we reviewed the iPhone 4 earlier this year, we felt that it should have offered more in this day and age, and it seems like Apple had to hold back a lot in order to not reveal the new iPods and Apple TV that were also announced today.
