The Samsung HMX-H106 is sexy and bold, offering the highest-capacity Solid State Drive capacity we've seen to date.

Ladies and gentleman, we're up to 64GB of internal flash memory now in the camcorder world, courtesy of the new Samsung HMX-H106 High-Definition dual-memory camcorder. Joining the HMX-H106 are the HMX-H105 and HMX-H104, which feature 32GB and 16GB of Solid State memory, respectively. The HMX-H100 is devoid of internal Solid State memory and records exclusively to SD/SDHC cards, though all four camcorders have the capability to record to SD/SDHC cards.

Now with all of that mumbo jumbo out of the way, we're here to tell you that all four camcorders are identical, aside from their internal storage capacities. Inside they have a 1/4.5" CMOS chip that captures 1920x1080/60i full-HD video, in addition to 1280x720/60P and 720x480/60P video resolutions, which are more suited toward Internet usage. Based on our experience with Samsung's top HD camcorders of the past, we're expecting some tantalizing video from these bad boys.

So why a Solid State Drive (SSD) as opposed to an HDD (Hard Disk Drive)? Samsung claims that their SSD technology offers an excelled level of performance and durability. Apparently, Samsung's SDD is also more lightweight, reduces power consumption and operates faster than a typical HDD. Of course, we'll be the judges of that when we get our paws on an HMX-H106.

New to the H-Series is a 37mm wide-angle Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens. Aside from being one hell of a mouthful, Samsung promises the new lens will expand the video frame, enabling shooters to fit more into their shots. The new Schneider lens also promises crisper, sharper video with a truer color reproduction. All four H-Series camcorders have a 10x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilization.

We're eager to play around with the new HD Time Lapse feature, which allows shooters to select an interval of 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 30 seconds and have the Samsung HMX-H106 capture an image consecutively, according to the selected interval. We also can't wait to cock the Samsung HMX-H106 up like a gun using the swivel grip and shoot video like it's high noon in Texas. These are certainly some flashy camcorders that will attract the attractive crowd, but we'll see how the H-Series fares in our clutches when being released in April 2006.
