Nokia recently complained about leaks of trade secrets, but we doubt they were referring to a possibly upcoming Nokia Eitri tablet phone.
According to BoyGeniusReport, which has gotten their hands on a relatively old internal road map showing more than 30 models, Nokia could be planning to release a tablet phone similar to a lot of what we've seen lately.
A prototype of a smartphone codenamed Nokia Eitri is scheduled to be released in early 2009, which would indicate a fall 2009 public release.
The Nokia Eitri is supposed to be an all-touch smartphone, sporting a 3.5-inch display with a resolution of 640 by 350 pixels. In comparison, the Nokia 5800 will offer a 3.2-inch screen with the same resolution.
Just like the upcoming BlackBerry Storm, the Nokia Eitri will offer a pressure sensitive touch UI with tactile feedback and gestures. It's not known whether Nokia, like Research In Motion, has teamed up with Synaptics to get the Nokia Eitri equipped with these features, but we guess time will tell.
According to BGR, the Nokia Eitri will boast a landscape candybar form factor, which is the same form factor used by the Nokia N800. Now, we really liked the Nokia N810 and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard too, but with some of the cool functionality of the N810 coupled with the N800's form factor, and the Nokia Eitri's technology mentioned above, we could be talking business. Powered by Symbian 5th Edition (version 5.0.1), the Nokia Eitri would obviously also boast the phone functionality lacking in Nokia's Internet Tablets, and hopefully, offer carrier subsidies.
That said, the only thing we know for sure is that Nokia will gradually release more and more touchscreen smartphones in the years ahead. In the meantime, check out Nokia's touchscreen history, apart from the Nokia 5800, by clicking on the images below:
