If you're keen to hear the latest news about the Sony Ericsson WinMo phone, including a possible U.S. release date, check out our in-depth look at its current status.

The new way of surviving the financial downturn for the major chains: Sell expensive unlocked phones like there is no tomorrow. Of course, that's a little too late now that the U.S. carriers are actually getting pretty hot stuff of their own. Still, according to BGR, Best Buy will soon offer the American version of the Xperia X1 (specs).

More specifically, Best Buy is promised to receive units by December 7, but whether that turns out to be the actual release date remains to be seen. Component shortage has been an issue for several of the smartphone manufacturers lately, and if the smartphone sales numbers will continue increasing on a global basis, it may be harder than ever to actually get your hands on your favorite one in the near future.

Sony Ericsson executives have already warned that the phone will be quite an expensive smartphone, so it's not surprising that Best Buy is aiming to sell it for $800. When the phone was initially announced, it was supposed to come with support for T-Mobile's 3G network. A couple of months ago, that changed to AT&T 3G support only.

While the phone is powered by Windows Mobile, it'll however not be easy to get your favorite Windows Mobile applications transitioned to your new device. Sony Ericsson recently released a developer kit, hoping that as many Windows Mobile developers as possible will release software versions supporting the new smartphone, though it remains to be seen exactly how fast that will happen.

That said, the phone will come with quite a few interesting applications out-of-box, such as Opera Mobile and a new music player made by Sony Ericsson. Since Sony Ericsson has decided to stop developing the Symbian UIQ platform, we can only hope that the manufacturer will put even more effort into creating a great experience for those who end up buying the smartphone.

Stay tuned for our full review to be posted soon.
