Details describing a new Motorola Android smartphone are now surfacing, suggesting incorporation of social network features courtesy of Motorola's Good Mobile Technology Group.
A few months ago, Motorola's Good Technology Group announced the Good Mobility Suite 6.0 for Windows Mobile, to be released later this year. Among the features is Good Mobile Messaging for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino, as well as Good Mobile Connection. The latter is brand new and will offer functionality such as Newsgator Go! and Microsoft Office SharePoint.
According to BusinessWeek, Motorola Good Technology is now also working on social networking features. This is supposed to be a vital part of a new Motorola smartphone powered by Google Android. Although there's no mention of whether the rest of Good Mobile's offering will be ported to Google Android, we assume Motorola will use this opportunity to spread all its services to the platform. After all, by the omission of any corporate e-mail connectivity, Google has already left this feature in the hands of third-party companies like Motorola Good Technology.
In terms of hardware, the new Motorola Android smartphone is supposed to offer a capacitive touchscreen like the Apple iPhone 3G and the recently released Motorola Krave ZN4 - though there are no further details with regards to how it will work exactly. Additionally, the smartphone is said to offer a slide-out QWERTY thumbboard. Overall, BusinessWeek suggests that the Motorola Android smartphone will be a higher-end version of the first Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G1 by HTC.
According to BusinessWeek, the Motorola Android smartphone will retail for $150 with a two-year contract and is scheduled to be launched in Q2 2009. It's also supposed to be released in Europe in Q3 2009. There's no word on which bands the Motorola Android smartphone will operate on, but given Motorola's release strategy in the past, we wouldn't be surprised to see both CDMA and GSM versions appear down the road.
