We hadn't even posted our first hands-on impressions of the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) before people had made up its mind about it. Find out what's on our minds right now.
Now that the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) has been officially announced, and the world has been shown what the Google Android powered smartphone is capable of and not, it's easy to see the loose ends of this project. We had expected to see a lot more loose ends though, meaning that the Open Handset Alliance is as serious as they can get about this stuff. We feared that they had chosen to rely too much on the open source community initially, but it seems like they may have found a good balance.
While our first look at the T-Mobile G1 (must read) revealed a less than optimal exterior, we had actually not expected that it would become such a big deal - but it has. If you've ever owned a phone with a replaceable battery, exchangeable covers, or a slider or flip mechanism, you know that the chances of soon holding a piece of junk in your hand are there. Still, how the T-Mobile G1 will actually fare after a few months of usage remains to be seen.
Of course, there's the Apple iPhone, as sleek and solid as a phone can ever get. It's almost impossible to imagine an iPhone that doesn't always look great; hence it's got tradeoffs such as a non-replaceable battery and no exchangeable covers for the many who fancy that stuff.
However, there's one thought we can't get out of our head. Now that Sony Ericsson has been hinting about the Xperia line not being exclusively launched for WinMo, will the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 be a Google Android powered smartphone with a snazzy interface? Then we would have become really excited.
But for now, we think the T-Mobile G1 is a lot more Crave than Roadkill, and the concept as a whole speaks for itself. Even ex Google Mobile Product Managers have very few bad things to say about it, or? Make your own judgment here.
