The T-Mobile G1 has finally been officially unveiled, powered by Google Android and a range of multimedia features.
T-Mobile today announced the international launch of the world's first phone based on Google Android (we'll post a hands-on story in a couple of hours). Available soon only for T-Mobile customers spanning two continents, the T-Mobile G1 combines full touch-screen functionality and a QWERTY keyboard with a mobile Web experience that includes Google products such as Google Maps Street View, Gmail and YouTube. The T-Mobile G1 also incorporates a trackball for one-handed navigation.
The T-Mobile G1 features a rich HTML e-mail client, which aims to seamlessly sync your e-mail, calendar and contacts from Gmail as well as most other POP3 or IMAP e-mail services. The T-Mobile G1 multitasks, so you can read a Web page while also downloading your e-mail in the background. It combines Instant Messaging support for Google Talk, as well as AOL, Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger in the U.S.
Furthermore, the T-Mobile G1 offers 3G, EDGE and Wi-Fi connectivity, and users can attach and share pictures taken with a 3-megapixel camera over e-mail and MMS. The T-Mobile G1 will soon also offer users the ability to upload and post pictures to blogs. Built-in support for YouTube allows users to stream originally-created YouTube content, as well as navigating through YouTube's website. A full HTML Web browser promises users to see any Web page the way it was designed to be seen. Users can zoom in to expand any section by tapping on the screen.
The T-Mobile G1 comes pre-loaded with a new application developed by Amazon.com that gives customers access to the Amazon MP3 digital music download store. Using the new application, users can download songs via Wi-Fi, while searching, listening to samples and purchasing can be done anywhere with a cellular connection.
The T-Mobile G1 is also the first phone to offer access to Android Market, which hosts unique applications and mash ups of existing and new services from developers around the world. When the T-Mobile G1 is launched next month, dozens of applications will be available for download on Android Market.
The T-Mobile G1 will be released on T-Mobile's U.S. network on October 22 for $180 with a two-year contract. It'll be available in all T-Mobile markets nationwide. An unlimited data plan will cost $25 per month, while unlimited data and messaging will cost $35 per month. A voice plan is required for all configurations. The T-Mobile G1 will also be released in the UK sometime in November 2008, while the other T-Mobile markets in Europe will get it in Q1 2009. Countries include Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands.
