Sporting Canon's new DIGIC 4 processor and a range of other improved features, the Canon PowerShot SD 880 IS and Canon PowerShot SD990 IS target style-conscious photo enthusiasts.
Canon today announced the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS and the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH cameras. Loaded with features such as optical image stabilization and Canon's new DIGIC 4 image processor, these cameras are aimed at style-conscious photo enthusiasts.
The Canon PowerShot SD990 IS offers specifications such as a 1/1.7" CCD sensor with a resolution of 14.7 megapixels, 3.7x optical zoom with optical image stabilization and Canon's new Quick Shot Mode for even faster shutter speed. Featuring a curved design and metallic topcoat, the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS will be available in black or silver. In addition, to commemorate the 100 millionth compact digital camera manufactured, Canon has created a limited-edition Canon PowerShot SD990 IS camera in red. The successor to Canon's popular SD870 IS, the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS camera boasts improved specifications such as a 10-megapixel resolution and 4x wide-angle optical zoom with optical image stabilization. In combination with the latest DIGIC 4 image processor and Motion Detection technology, the wide-angle zoom lens has been improved, enabling consumers to easier capture large and small group shots while on vacation or attending social gatherings. Available in two-toned body colors of black and silver or gold and brown, the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS targets fashion-conscious users. Additionally, four large convex buttons are positioned to the right side of the 3-inch LCD screen to make camera operation and menu navigation easier. The LCD screen's contrast ratio has been greatly improved as well.
The new DIGIC 4 image processor, a proprietary technology, accounts for both cameras' improved performance levels, including significantly improved signal processing speed and higher image quality. One of the most important new features made possible is Servo AF, which is a form of continuous focus tracking for moving subjects. By pressing the shutter button half-way, the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS and Canon PowerShot SD880 IS can track subject movement up to the instant of exposure, which should result in sharper images.
Furthermore, the processor's high ISO speed noise reduction processing has also been improved, while a new Intelligent Contrast Correction function automatically improves image quality in high-contrast shooting situations. Another key improvement thanks to DIGIC 4 is improved face detection, and Canon claims that the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS and Canon PowerShot SD880 IS should be able to recognize human faces from more angles than earlier. Additionally, a new face detection self-timer will automatically take a photo two seconds after a new face enters the scene.
Scheduled to be available in October 2008, the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS and Canon PowerShot SD880 IS will have estimated selling prices of $400 and $300, respectively. Kit contents will include a 32MB SD memory card, battery, charger, wrist strap, USB and AV cables, Canon's software suite and a 1-year limited warranty.
